ABS has been tested in the minor leagues since 2021, and 2025 will be the first test with the Major League players. This play caused some scorekeeper confusion. The batter is up with two outs and two strikes. Runner on third base. The batter swings and misses, strike three but the ball gets by the catcher. Before the catcher can throw down to first base to try and get the batter out, he tags the runner out from third who is trying to steal home. Inning over. But, who leads off next inning for the team batting? The next batter in the lineup or does the current batter come back up because he was never recorded as an out or safe? The same batter came back up to bat next inning and the umpire and coach from the opposing team didn’t say anything. Did they get it right?

The umpire thought the catcher wanted to challenge the call when he asked if it was a strike. Umpire announced a challenge and canceled it on the mic immediately afterwards while saying “crowd is too loud.” Chicago is a baseball city.

Trout's ABS challenge not allowed. Trout thought the pitch was originally called a ball by the home plate umpire (even though it ended up being called a strike)...which is why he didn't challenge right away. You can hear something before "strike." What do you think?

Spike says after watching the Field of Dreams game last night he misses a world where there was no ABS challenge system. "There were two things that the game didn't have, the ABS challenges, and the square on the screen so you could see the strike zone. And I'm not against the changes but I'll tell you, I kind of liked it for a moment there. It felt like a baseball game with less rules and replay."

Baseball's rules have continuously evolved from casual 19th-century variations into a strategic, fast-paced modern game. 1857 The game used to end after the inning in which a team reached 21 runs. Now it is a 9-inning contest and the higher scoring team wins. No base can be made on a foul ball. 1858 Called strikes are introduced. A batter is out on a batted ball, fair or foul, if caught on the fly or after one bounce. 1862 Pitcher's box introduced' 12 feet by 3 feet. 1863 Bat size is regulated. Called balls and bases on balls introduced Pitcher's box is now 12 feet by 4 feet. The pitcher is no longer allowed to take a step during his delivery and he had to pitch with both feet on the ground at the same time. Home base and pitcher's box must be marked. 1862 Each base runner must touch each base in making the circuit. 1864 Out on a fair bound is removed and the "fly catch" of fair balls is adopted. 1866 Pitcher's box narrowed to six feet wide. 1867 Pitcher is now permitted to move around inside their box. 1868 Bat length limited to 42 inches. Pitcher allowed to lift feet when delivering the ball. This umpire called a ball that the defensive team thought was a strike. The coach called a timeout after the walk and gathered his infield on the mound. On the next pitch, the catcher slid to the right out of the way of the ball making no attempt to catch it and let it drill the umpire right in the mask. Umpires are fallible human beings. Bad call? Maybe it was. But intentionally letting the ball hit him is poor sportsmanship, dangerous and has no place in the game. The coach, pitcher and catcher should all be ejected from the game. Heck, I might just call the game if I was the umpire and if that is what you are teaching your players, maybe that coach should never be allowed to coach again. What would you do if you were the umpire? How about if it was your child pitching or catching? And what are you saying to the coach if he was the coach of your team?
