Yes, the announcement is real. President Trump posted this (or a near-identical version) on Truth Social on Friday, September 18, 2026. Major outlets including the New York Times, BBC, CNN, Reuters, CBS, PBS, and The Guardian reported it the same day. The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have announced they have reached an agreement on Arctic/North Atlantic security. They expect to formally sign it next week at the UN General Assembly in New York. It then requires parliamentary procedures in the relevant countries before it enters into force. No full text of the agreement has been released. What Trump claimed vs. what others saidTrump described it as giving the U.S. “permanent control over security, and all other needs” in Greenland, an “Infinite Life” agreement with no expiration, at no cost to the U.S., with the ability to do “what is necessary,” a large new U.S. military presence, and a U.S. veto over any adversary base, military presence, or sensitive investment. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it a historic deal that “permanently and completely addresses” U.S. national security concerns and keeps Greenland in North America’s strategic defense area. U.S. officials said it includes permanent U.S. access, basing, and overflight rights that would continue even if Greenland became independent, plus bans on non-NATO bases/troops and screening mechanisms for sensitive investments (aimed at China and Russia). Denmark and Greenland confirmed an agreement but framed it differently. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said it strengthens common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic (good for NATO and Europe) while recognizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. Greenland’s Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen said it recognizes Greenland’s interests and is to the benefit of all parties. Reports indicate there is no transfer of territory or sovereignty to the United States. This builds on the existing 1951 U.S.-Denmark defense agreement (updated in 2004) that already gives the U.S. broad rights to operate bases in Greenland, such as Pituffik Space Base. The new deal appears to make certain rights more explicit and durable, add investment screening, and explicitly bar non-NATO military presence.
