If you play on any aspect of ego (intelligence, wealth, appearance, etc.) and align with their viewpoint of it, they'll let their guard down. The only thing to be careful of is not coming across as someone who is deliberately self-incongruent. Because that suggests a motive.

This matches my real-world experience in terms of trying to convince someone without them feeling threatened or feeling you are intentionally targeting their EGO. Another strategy is to always frame taking/removing something something as a "swap" or "upgrade".
