🔴Zimbabwe is facing a severe maternal mortality crisis, with a staggering 960 deaths per 100 000 live births. In January 2025 alone, about 300 infants and 54 women died during excrutiating childbirths. This is three times higher than the global average and almost double the Sub-Saharan Africa average. It was a revealing experience for me during the visits, last week, to Gombe, Katsina, and Sokoto States, where we had the opportunity to witness firsthand the challenges and progress in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Meeting with the Governors and key stakeholders, we reinforced our commitment to maternal and child mortality reduction, hospital revitalization, and expanding access to essential health services. In Gombe State Government of Gombe State, I commended HE Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya leadership in immunization and healthcare financing while highlighting how the $1 billion Project Hope Project HOPE will complement state-level investments, ensuring sustainable health outcomes at the grassroots. In Katsina State Katsina State Government, I underscored the urgency of tackling maternal mortality, where 15 local government areas contribute significantly to the national burden. Through the MNH-MaMII Initiative, NHIA NIGERIA, we aim to work with the state to ensure that every pregnant woman receives the care she needs. Let's start with maternal and infant deaths, in January 2025 alone, 299 infants and 54 mothers died from childbirth complications . The health budget is starved, in 2025, health received just 10.1% of the national budget below the 15% Abuja Declaration target and of that, over 80% went to salaries, leaving crumbs for medicines, equipment, and infrastructure . For 2026, Treasury slashed the Health Ministry's request by over 70%, giving it only 28% of what it asked for . Hospitals regularly go without basics Harare Central has suffered weeks without running water, and public hospitals face chronic shortages of even paracetamol and gloves . “Artificial intelligence carries high potential to support health care workers and to improve how care is delivered. On November 7, 2024, the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH INFO) launched a free cesarean section outreach under the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (#MAMII SWAp Coordination Office), marking a significant step in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s (Federal Ministry of Health, NIGERIA) efforts to save lives. Two weeks after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Insurance Authority (@NHIAnigeria), this outreach has already started to deliver free, lifesaving care to women, removing the financial barriers that too often cost lives. We are at the early stages but optimistic that we can expand this carefully and rapidly in the period ahead. MAMII is central to our fight against maternal mortality, particularly intensely targeting 172 high-burden local government areas that account for over half of all maternal deaths. By providing free cesarean sections for poor and vulnerable women who meet eligibility criteria, and ensuring these services are accessible in both public and private facilities empaneled by NHIA, this initiative demonstrates how health equity can become a reality. With Israel blocking the entry of spare parts and medical supplies, Gaza's hospital engineers have been forced to salvage parts from damaged machinery just to keep equipment running. At Al-Shifa Hospital — once the largest medical facility in Gaza — engineers have managed to restore only around 15% of the hospital's equipment. "We now collect equipment damaged during the [Israeli] ground incursion and the bombing of the hospital … dismantle matching equipment of the same type, salvage and repair the parts, and then reassemble the equipment.,” Ahmed Younis, an engineer at Al-Shifa, told Drop Site. “But the equipment is not operating at the level of efficiency it is supposed to.” As of June 2026, WHO reported that the principal barriers to health facilities being rehabilitated in the Gaza Strip were a lack of medical equipment, affecting 97% of facilities, and shortages of medicines, affecting over 80% of facilities. The Ministry of Health has also issued an urgent warning that Gaza’s few remaining oxygen plants are operating beyond capacity and breaking down. In parallel with the decimation of Gaza’s health care system, Israel is continuing to severely restrict the number of Palestinians allowed out of Gaza to seek treatment abroad. Fellow Nigerians and friends from around the world, good day to you all. For decades, dedicated professionals in Nigeria’s health sector have risen early and returned home late, serving their fellow citizens with commitment and resilience, often in difficult conditions and with limited recognition. Under the compassionate leadership of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we acknowledge that successive governments did not always provide the enabling environment for our best talents to thrive. Longstanding commitments were poorly implemented, leading to dissatisfaction among health workers, particularly members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives. This reality informed our deliberate approach over the past two and a half years, during which we proactively cultivated industrial harmony through constructive engagement with stakeholders, addressing both legacy and current challenges directly. Despite recent disruptions by a small segment of health workers, notably resident doctors, the overwhelming majority of Nigeria’s capable health workforce have continued to report for duty, serving our people with dedication, care, and innovation. While not all legacy challenges have been conclusively resolved, unprecedented progress has been achieved under President Tinubu’s leadership. Through transparent negotiations, the retirement age for clinically skilled health workers has been increased from 60 to 65 years. Outstanding arrears from 2023 to date have been paid, while the new hazard allowance is being processed. Over ₦10 billion owed under the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund has been fully paid. Salary relativity adjustments under CONHESS for health workers and CONMESS for doctors are being assured and institutionalized by the federal government. All other major and longstanding demands of the three main health sector union blocs are being addressed through Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, statutorily convened by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. This process, involving union leadership and relevant government officials, is well underway, and we remain committed to concluding it to the satisfaction of health workers and the citizens they serve. Despite minor industrial distractions by a very small minority, with over 90% of demands already met, Nigerians continue to express confidence in the health workforce, and the data confirms this. In the second quarter of 2024, Nigeria recorded an average of 10 million hospital visits across all levels of care. By the second quarter of 2025, this rose to nearly 40 million visits in a single quarter, representing almost a fourfold increase. The Central Bank of Nigeria has reported a 52% reduction in foreign exchange accessed for external medical tourism since President Tinubu assumed office in 2023. At the same time, facilities nationwide are witnessing increased patronage by foreigners choosing to receive care in Nigeria. Medical tourism is steadily being reversed, while citizen perception surveys from 2023 to 2025 show rising confidence in the health system. Overall system confidence stands at 55%, confidence in the government’s ability to manage health emergencies at 67%, and patient satisfaction at 74%. As we continue building systems that serve all Nigerians regardless of status or income, we are healing a once-fractured ecosystem and restoring public trust. An international orthopedic emergency medical team was deployed to Al-Ahli Hospital, with support from WHO, to address the surge in trauma cases. The hospital is once again overwhelmed. Following an airstrike on a school in Gaza City, Al-Ahli reportedly received over 180 injured and 52 deceased in just one night, pushing its emergency unit to eight times its capacity. With only three operating theatres, the hospital cannot meet the current surgical demand. Of the 160 available blood units, 50 were used in a single day, leaving stocks critically low. The hospital’s CT scanner — the only one in northern Gaza — has broken down due to sustained overuse under the heavy patient load. To ease pressure on Al-Ahli, WHO is supporting the improvement of trauma care pathways to enable patient transfers to Al-Shifa Hospital. WHO will also deliver essential supplies from its dwindling stocks to help replenish the hospital. Without the immediate lifting of the aid blockade and a ceasefire, these efforts risk falling short, as the violence intensifies and health facilities struggle to remain operational.
