Slumlords that have been piling up HUNDREDS of violations over the years. as someone in nyc real estate, ive literally seen apartment buildings in NYC leaning and falling off brick by brick, sometimes entire sides of a building because of slumlords not keeping up with repairs. many have died or been injured from these incidents. In Mamdani's plan, the city is providing upkeep without slumlords consent out of safety reasons and allowing slumlords to pay back. and ONLY then will they lose the property for NON-PAYMENT OF REPAIRS. sounds better than what banks do. banks can seize your property for violation and non payments without even offering a repair. you need would need to refinance IF YOU qualify. And lastly rent freeze is normal in nyc, it happens every few years. and it ONLY applies to buildings with 6 units or more. why couldnt these slumlords make the necessary repairs for the last 9 years where there was no rent freeze????

Mamdani’s “city communes” violate the constitution twice: 5th Amendment states coercive buy-ups is a regulatory taking without just compensation. Commerce Clause states the government can’t force private citizens to buy OR sell in a local market. You don’t get to nationalize NYC apartments with taxpayer cash and call it “voluntary.” That’s theft with a smile… a Non-Duchenne smile.

This girl doesn’t know what she’s talking about. There’s no legal mechanism for the mayor to freeze the rent unilaterally. He can appoint board members who will vote to freeze increases on rent stabilization but that’s limited in numerous ways. He also can’t just seize privately owned buildings. What he’s gonna do is use programs that are already in place to charge fines and put liens on things, ultimately unpaid liens and taxes could result in property seizure, but it would take years and there are a lot of legal barriers. I’m not saying don’t worry about it. I’m just saying it’s not gonna be as cut and dry as he thinks it is.
