Kids, the copper is not the point, the copper wire electrically grounds the soil in the pot by attaching it to, well, the ground.

Having said that, it would be interesting to see a comparison of copper with aluminum wire or steel, that would be a good test. Reminder to self, get off your a** and start your own gardening project!
