The quality and intensity of those training sessions have a big impact on what you see on the pitch. Even the reason Manchester United didn’t spend heavily enough could have something to do with trusting Carrick to get more out of the players already there. But the recruitment team also needs to stop buying players based on how much they might improve in the future. The future is now. United need players who can improve the team immediately, not another group of players we have to wait two or three years to see whether they are good enough.
