“Let me see what I can do” - he knew the loyalty. This is how corporate friendships are made

I managed a newly remodeled grocery store back in 2002 and we were raking in the $$$ (12-17% profit, and if you know anything about grocery retail, you'll understand how unusual this is). As part of the remodel, they added a high-end cheese island, where we sold fancy, smelly, and extremely overpriced cheese. Since this was new to the store, I didn't have anyone to manage the island, so I picked my best worker (I'm call her Heidi, but that wasn't her name) from our Service Deli and let her run with it. She was pretty new, so made about 60% of what the journeyman clerks made, but she was fantastic. Self-starter, great with customers, creative on selling slow moving items and reducing waste, never called out, always on time... you get the picture, she was perfect for the job. After a few months, she asked me about a pay raise, which she 100% deserved, but I needed approval from one of my many bosses to grant it. Just comparing her numbers to other stores with cheese islands, you could easily see she more than paid for bumping her right to journeyman wage. I asked her to give me a little time, because I had discovered that the best time to ask for anything from the DM on up was at the conclusion of a big and successful inspection. When the next round of holiday walks came, we had that store so dialed you wouldn't even know anyone ever shopped there. Everything was perfect, nothing out of place, every company initiative or program executed without flaw. At the end of the walk, when the Vice President was congratulating me and my team on the outstanding presentation, he said the magic words "What can I do for you?" Not wanting to make someone's pay a public topic, I asked if we could talk about something in private. So he pulled me over to the side and I laid out my case for her. He flat out said no. I presented the numbers to prove my request was justified. He said no again - no discussion, just flat out no. Thinking I was important to this company, I asked a third time, being just naive enough to think my contributions and the very recently received praise actually meant something. This time he looked me in the eye, told me no, and added I would never bring it up again - ever, and I understood exactly what the unfinished threat meant. Of course she moved on to greener pastures soon after, and I ended up with a nice older lady, but one who struggled every day she was there and turned that golden-egg laying goose into a money pit. Until we had to replace her, then the next one, until we finally found someone decent who did an acceptable job. I don't know if 'Heidi' ever believed I really tried to get her that raise, I'd like to think she did, but I wouldn't blame her if she thought I was lying. How else could I justify such a stupid and short-sighted decision beyond laziness or incompetence? I should have quit that day, once I realized none of us mattered more than blindly following company policy did to executives that believed they knew more than those on the front line.

HR and every company are professional liars. You start shopping your résumé and I guarantee you you’ll get a better job.

Most companies I’ve been at “The highest corporate will approve a raise for is 3%”

Companies don’t like spending a few thousand dollars today to save hundreds of thousands of dollars tomorrow for the same reason most people go to McDonalds today and not go to the gym to fight for a better body tomorrow. People have a hard time with delayed gratification.

I’ve cut my own salary to make room for raises that were earned. If you have good people you take care of them. And all the guy asked for in the beginning was help, not even a raise or promotion.

Yeah, this is how it is. There are several people I play leap frog with. We all benefit from each other. Always be nice to your coworkers, especially the ones that work hard.

Rule 1: Negotiate like a maniac before signing any job contract. Once you are in, pay rise is almost impossible. Rule 2: Always apply for jobs for fun and interview for the fun of it. It keeps you updated and job switching when needed becomes easier. Rule 3: Your employer will lay you off ones there is a financial crises, don’t be overly committed . Always stand on business, ask for what is due you, leave when you get a better offer.

Go look for a different job. The moment they realize they will lose you, that’s when the money comes.

Once you leave a company for reasons like that, don't go back no matter what increase they offer you. They should have made that offer BEFORE you decided to leave. It's just poor decision making. Would you really want to work again for idiots like that?

Then they replace Zach with immigrants willing to work for a fraction of his pay, the quality of their products takes a nosedive, the company starts bleeding money and then it’s bankruptcy. Do they ever get tired of this bullshit?

Dealing with this right now. And instead of fuckin hiring people, corporate is contracting people to work there for the day… so every day we are training new people what to do just so they can work for the day then never see them again. We’ve been losing employees all year long and have yet to hire a single new one. And we got 2 more leaving this week

The vast majority of workers are NOT worth the oay they get in the first place. The majority dont grow and never do their jobs well. You do the job like you love it, ecen if you hate and will raises.. most do the bare minimum and lucky to keep the jobs they have. Raises are NOT automatic!!! Minimum wage increases cause all wage to go up. That is permanent inflation, hugher costs and more demands for higher wages. STFU! You earn your wages, it NOT an entitlement. Occuping a job is NOT EARNING.

🤣 this is way more accurate than those ones where they have snarky attitudes that in real life would get them fired. I understand the snarky ones where they tell off their manager is what they wished they said, but employment is basically conditional on being *liked*

I took a 50% paycut just to leave my last job and move into one that didnt stress me the fuck out. Last job made me lose 68% of my hair and gave me heart issues, both I recovered from in the next job. Some pay just aint worth the bullshit. Got to a better pay bracket later..

25 years ago, I was hired by an insurance company to convert their agent illustration program from COBOL to Javascript, so that agents could create cost project projections for their clients. They needed the system switched over to online in 60 days. I built it in 40 days. Lots of 80 hour weeks, but got it done. VP of client relations called me into his office to tell me that he had “swayed the board” into giving me a bonus for completing the job early. He handed me a check. A $60 check. That wouldn’t cover my parking fees. That was the week I decided I didn’t need to be in the W-2 world. I started a consultancy, quit my job and became a contractor for the rest of my career. What I always thought was funny was working as a consultant in an office full of W-2s: the employees always said they could never be a contractor, because they needed “job security,” but all they ever talked about was rumors of layoffs and zero pay raises.

Upper management is the worst. Anyone with director or higher positions are mostly trash people who dont know how to run a successful business. Managers can be actually ok. Depends on the manager
