Victor Gao is the former translator for Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. Now Vice President of the Beijing-based Centre for China and Globalisation, he gained international prominence following a viral interview with Cathy Newman of Channel 4 in the heat of the US trade war with China. Speaking at the inaugural session of the International Security Conference on Africa (ISCA), held in Kigali, Rwanda in June 2025, Gao elicited thunderous applause from the audience when he remarked that Africa should be free to use its own judgment to determine which country between China and the US works best as its development and trading partner. Here’s how he put it: “The real choice for Africa, as well as for the rest of mankind, is whether the United States is doing the right thing or is doing the wrong thing or whether China is doing the right thing or doing the wrong thing. If the United States is doing the right thing, work with the United States. But if the United States is doing the wrong thing, why should you bother about working with the United States or following its leadership? Similarly, if China is doing the right thing, why don't you want to work with China? And God forbid, if China is doing the wrong thing, why should you work with China? That means African countries, people in Africa, need to use their own brain power to make a decision first, whether this country or that country is doing the right thing or the wrong thing. Don't be forced by any other country to make a choice which will not serve your fundamental interests.”

Islamabad: JUI Chief Maulana Fazl ur Rehman attended the 3rd Joint Consultative Meeting (JCM) of Political Parties of Pakistan and China on #CPEC, held today in Islamabad. The event was co-chaired by the Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan and Mr. Liu Jianchao, Minister of International Department of the Communist Party of China. Maulana Fazl ur Rehman: There is a consensus in Pakistan regarding Pak-China relations. Pak-China friendship has always transcended our political differences. Pakistan attaches importance to peaceful co-existence and cooperative relations in the region and supports progress towards it. Pakistan believes in peaceful and equitable resolution of disputes. We are grateful that China has always supported Pakistan unconditionally on the Kashmir issue and Pakistan has also always supported China unconditionally on the Taiwan issue. Pak-China relations, which were mentioned by the speakers before me, is a shared vision of all of us and I am proud that JUI Pakistan and CPEC are friends and we want to make this friendship meaningful and see it beneficial for the people of both countries. The credit for the progress made in this regard also goes to the Parliament of Pakistan and the CPC when in 1995 the CPC (China) invited the Foreign Committee of the National Assembly of Pakistan and briefed us on the new economic vision. Then on behalf of Pakistan, we presented Pakistan's "Trade Via Pakistan" concept. And for seven days, we discussed this topic in every meeting continuously, and after seven days, the CPEC informed our delegation that they supported the proposal. I regret that by today it should have been completed, but some obstacles have definitely come in the middle, which are a matter of concern for us as well as for you, but China-Pakistan's commitment to CPEC is strong. With this commitment, we also have to complete all the suspended projects and Insha-Allah we have to lay the foundations of cooperation with each other in different fields, take them forward and China & Pakistan will prove to be the top priority in each other's friendship and relations all over the world and no obstacle will be allowed in it. I warmly welcome you and your entire delegation. This conversation will further strengthen the relations between the two countries. Thank you very much

WHY DOESN’T CHINA🇨🇳 DUMP US🇺🇸 TREASURY BILLS? Victor Gao: ‘China wants to make sure that the Chinese foreign currency reserve can be well-invested. And investing in the US treasury is one of the ways to deploy Chinese foreign currency reserves. China used to be the largest treasury bond holder. China consistently and continuously reduced its US treasury bond holding. And this is also a fact well-recorded. And in the future, I think China will continue to decrease its US treasury bonds. China also cares about the financial integrity of the global financial market as a whole. And for example, if the United States financial market tanks, it’s absolutely bad for the United States, that’s without a doubt. But, it’s also bad for the international economy, international financial integrity. So from the Chinese perspective being very philosophical for thousands of years, the Chinese mind is always being very philosophical. We want to do the right thing, even if doing the right thing means the opposite side will benefit. And we do not want to do the wrong thing, even if doing the wrong thing will make the hostile side suffer, if mankind will suffer more. So I think, you are talking about an equilibrium. And the Chinese equilibrium is always don’t do unto others what you do not want others do unto you.” —Victor Gao, President of the Center for China and Globalisation, on the latest episode of Going Underground Watch the full interview in the quoted post below👇

🚨PAKISTAN🇵🇰 AND INDIA🇮🇳 AT WAR AGAIN ☢️ A Rutgers University study estimated that if India and Pakistan were to strike each other’s population centres with 250 nuclear weapons, with a yield of 100 kilotons each, an estimated 127 million people would be killed in South Asia from just the explosions, fires, and radiation. The long-term effects would be even more horrifying, 37 million tonnes of soot would be injected into the atmosphere, sending temperatures across the planet plunging by more than 5 degrees Celsius, resulting in a famine which would kill an estimated 2 billion people. The world is once again on the brink, thanks to a problem created by Britain when carving up colonial India. Billions of lives now have the nuclear Sword of Damocles having over their necks. Unless the great powers such as China🇨🇳 and Russia🇷🇺 can mediate, the nuclear nightmare may become a reality. As we speak, Pakistan and India continue to exchange fire with the hostilities escalating. The path to a multipolar world could face a serious setback with India and Pakistan destroying each other, undoing years of development and plunging the world into an abyss. China’s concern will be the CPEC, the 3000KM Chinese infrastructure network project which runs through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir that is an integral part of the historic Belt & Road Initiative. China will also be concerned with how its thawing relations with India will be affected, as India’s strikes could put China’s investments in Pakistan at risk. The US’🇺🇸 eyes will be on the growing military ties with India, and its bid to turn India into an ally against China, Washington’s next target for sabotage, war and destruction. The US also has close ties with the political and military elites of Pakistan, which aided many of Washington’s dirty wars. India and Pakistan annihilating each other may shift the balance of power back to the old colonial order, led by the US with its loyal vassals in the US, UK, and EU, the same colonial order despised by all in the region. The annihilation of both countries obviously is neither in the interests of India and Pakistan, and it is definitely not in the interests of the multipolar world, which billions around the world need for real economic development, prosperity and security. Let’s hope India and Pakistan step back from the brink of all-out destruction.

🗣️FIFA President Gianni Infantino to PM Shebaz Sharif "Shehbaz Sharif Prime Minister of Pakistan, What you did and what you are doing with your countries is absolutely incredible. It is transformative. I can just take my hat off. And what we can do with football is to remind everyone that besides all the important things you are doing investment in technology, investment in infrastructure, in schools, in hospitals, in roads, we need to invest as well in emotions. Invest in happiness. And that's why we like to say that football unites the world because we need people to come together. We need to go to people. We need to learn about people. We don't have to stay locked in our place. And for this reason, I'm very happy that we organized the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar. We had incredible, biggest 3 million spectators, 5 billion viewers all over the world. The last Women's World Cup in Australia, New Zealand, 2 billion viewers around the world. Next year, Canada, Mexico, United States of America will have 6 billion viewers and 7 million fans coming together and spending time together in joy and in happiness. These are numbers which should make us think because at the end of the day, what people want on top of, of course, having a job, having an education is to have a moment where they can forget everything and just be happy. So, the gentlemen here are in charge of the most important things. I'm in charge of the most important, of the least important things, but which is extremely important, which is football."
