Many coaches on Twitter will hate me, but we do this drill everyday. Here’s why we do it and why I’ll always do it…

1. Immediately sets the Culture. Quick story: we had a recruit visit, after watching the drill to end our warmup the recruit said one thing, “Wow, you guys love defense here.” Damn right! We know it and anyone else will know it within the first 5 minutes of practice.

2. The Standard and Desensitization. Many players don’t know how resilient their bodies are. The repetitive act of diving on the floor every practice desensitizes the fear or hesitation. It's not some heroic act of courage, it's what we expect. We always win the floor!

3. Energy. So often the energy we start practice with will determine the type of practice we will have. This drill takes literally 30 seconds, gets all the guys moving, talking and in sync. Ending with excitement and a loud gym. You can’t tell me that’s not worth 30 seconds.

4. Agility. Yes, when done right it will improve agility and movement. Especially when done with foot fire into lateral slides. Although the short length of the drill will limit any serious gains, the micro workout each day will add up.

5. Leadership. Every day a new player leads the drill. This helps break players out of their shell, makes every player lead on defense, and is great ownership for the players. The guys this year even decided to do it during the walk through before our NCAA tournament game!

Many coaches have knocked this drill, but tell me a drill that sets the culture, creates tough habits, warms and works out the players, creates a ton of energy, and does it in a small dose of 30 seconds. You can’t tell me there are many better ways to spend 30 seconds.

Is it going to lead to a great defense team, no - a lot more work goes into that. But can it help, certainly. That’s why I do it and why I’ll always do it!

Just out of curiosity who would have a problem with this drill?

Do what works for you! We shouldn't shame other coaches for their drills. There are reasons for why coaches do certain drills and we can't always understand why just from seeing it on social media.
