But Iranians remember, and we’ve been seeing this same playbook in the West. “Before the [Shah’s] reforms, much of the land was owned by the mullahs. They never forgave the Shah. Once condemned as corrupt, now purified by relative poverty, the mullahs found it easy to attract followers… Even in the progressive atmosphere of universities, girls exchanged their traditional blue jeans for the veil and prayed before going into the streets.”
