There are people in our state and federal government who need to see the inside of a jail cell for a long time. Watching Fran talk about her home in Altadena broke me. The enormity of the loss in the LA area is hard to comprehend and is ongoing as the fires continue to expand and new ones pop up. For people who either don’t live in LA or have never lived in LA, there’s this idea that everyone impacted by the fires is wealthy and doesn’t need support. Nothing could be further from the truth. While there are some very wealthy people who have lost their homes—people who have the resources to rebuild—there are so many people who have been impacted by the fires who desperately need support. People in communities like Altadena, where fires have ravaged so many homes, are, for the most part, not wealthy. Many of them have lived in their homes for decades and bought them when Altadena was a much more affordable community. There are also many renters who have been impacted by the fires. And this doesn’t even address all of the hourly workers who have lost customers and clients now that so many houses have burned down. I have linked to two GoFundMe pages below. The issue, however, is that there are a number of bad landlords who have been able to operate with impunity, with no consequences for their actions. And part of what this housing plan puts forward is specifically funding to ensure that we can hold these kinds of landlords accountable, and especially the top 10 worst landlords in New York City, so that we can actually start to explore all of the tools we need to transfer ownership of those properties to people who will actually steward them safely, whether they’re a nonprofit, a community land trust, or the tenants themselves. This is not the only vision for what it looks like to have politics in this country—that is so divorced from the needs and wants of everyday people. And what we are looking to show in New York City is an alternative to what has led so many to become disenchanted with the political process. We want to show that not only can government work, but it must, and that at its core, our responsibility is to working people—to ensure that we’re doing everything to make their lives easier. That has to be what drives our actions, and for too long, government has felt more like a distraction than a fulfillment of the needs of the people who’ve been left behind by the politics of today.

My question :- Have both countries are moving towards restoring full diplomatic strength at the respective High Commissions? Are staffing levels now aligned with earlier understandings? P. Kumaran, Secretary (East), answered: Let me start with the question on diplomatic staff strengths and mission and consulates. Yes, this has been discussed during various dialogues at various levels. And there is broad agreement that we should be increasing diplomatic strength on both sides progressively to reach their levels in the past. We are already in the process of doing that. You would have seen that the High Commissioners have returned uh to their positions. We have a High Commissioner in our mission in Canada and similarly the Canadian mission is headed now by a High Commissioner. We, let me tell you that the numbers are currently at levels better than what we had in 2023. And we continue to take steps to take this to the next level in keeping with the expanded agenda and ambition. And we are taking this uh on a step-by-step basis. Randhir Jaiswal
