One thing I meant to bring up in this video is that China has no official estimate on the number killed in the Great Leap Forward famine. If the Western estimates are wrong, why don't they provide better ones? I expect the real number of dead is hard to know, but the mainstream Western estimates seem reasonable and consistent with what data China does publish.

You’re correct, but your next step is recognizing that being a dictator is not what’s bad about Mao; it’s that he was a communist. Dictatorship is a natural form of government and will continue to occur, typically out of necessity in times of crisis. Communism, meanwhile, is a false religion.

A lot of this seems to be people hearing “dictator” and translating that in their mind to “bad guy” Which if you aren’t a believer in the liberal consensus, you really don’t have to do. You could say “yes, so what”. It’s this odd overlap of “Maoism is good, dictatorship is bad”
