I’m not sure if a lot of people remember this but when Mike Tomlin was a rookie head coach he was so obsessed with practice that he nearly doubled the amount of two-a-days that the Steelers usually had. Ed Bouchette even did an entire piece on this at the time. It was also one of the longest training camps the Steelers had. But after the team faded at the end of 2007, Tomlin blamed himself when most head coaches would likely stay the course and force his players to get used the rigorous schedule. For any fans of Steelers history, staying such a course would likely bring to mind Bill Austin. But Tomlin did what Austin didn’t. He changed his practice schedule. Changed how he approached training camp. Changed what he personally focused on during practice. If you recall, he focused an unnatural length of time on special teams during his 2007 practices but, in 2008, he learned to trust his ST coach. I jumped the gun this morning on George Pickens. I immediately jumped to the low hanging fruit that the Steelers traded the ultra talented receiver because of his behavior, but that’s disrespectful on two fronts. It would actually be an indictment on George Pickens and Mike Tomlin, and that doesn’t sit right with me. Mike Tomlin doesn’t have to give up on George Pickens in order to make a business decision, & it’s also a decision that probably benefits Pickens. With the acquisitions of DK and the uncertainty at QB what was this year gonna look like for GP? Maybe, neither side really had a vision for it.

Mike Tomlin is unfirable in my opinion, but that means nothing. So I asked Cam Heyward why he, & others still believe in Mike T so much. His answer was informative, but also layered. It started with transparency, & ended with his ability to motivate. Cam was ready to retire, but Tomlin wasn’t having it. He knew exactly how the meeting needed to go. He had a list of players at Can’s position, their ages & what they’d accomplished. If that wasn’t enough he had old film of Cam, & told him he’d never be that again. I can’t say exactly how effective Bitcoin is as a money, but it’s being perceived by many as an alternative money and so is worth paying attention to. Money needs to be both a medium of exchange and a storehold of wealth — and the latter is more important. I doubt that any central bank will take it on as a reserve currency. That’s because all of the transactions are public, so there’s no privacy to it, and there’s a risk that in the future the code could be broken to make it less effective through government controls. My personal approach is that I do have some Bitcoin in my portfolio, but not much.
