Ukraine is marking the Day of Unmanned Systems Forces for the first time President Volodymyr Zelensky said that drones have become one of the key tools of the war. Today, I signed a decree on measures at the state level to protect Ukraine’s national shrines. A law on our Ukrainian national shrines will be prepared for Ukraine’s Independence Day – we discussed this with Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk – and I ask MPs to support it. It should clearly define what constitutes our national shrines and what steps are needed to protect our shrines throughout the entire territory of Ukraine. And this status of national shrines, enshrined in law, should give more opportunities to the teams of our shrines – to everyone working to protect Ukrainian heritage – strengthening them in their working conditions, financial capacity, and political and legal tools for protecting our shrines, our museum collections, and our heritage. Real quick thoughts on Bellum - which entered Beta yesterday. 1) There is nothing else like it. It's the only game designed specifically to force teamwork in a hardcore PVP tactical shooter. It does it in new ways: SA tools locked to leadership roles, novel respawn mechanics requiring you to maneuver near teammates and punishes lone wolves, and more. 2) It's a game about gunfights, and it does them so damn well. Fire and maneuver works. Fire superiority matters. Cover, concealment, obscuration, even IMTs are rewarded while bonzai charges are nearly always fatal. 3) I think what speaks to me most is how well it models the cognitive overload of a maneuver leader. A Squad leader in this game is monitoring/working up to 2 nets + local at once - Command, Squad, and VOIP. This is modeled in other games, of course. But Bellum adds some spice - your hand comes off your weapon to activate the PTT, so you can't fire particularly well or do medical tasks while working a net. By default, you have platoon assault net in one ear and squad assault in the other. It feels like I'm wearing peltors for an FMP or going on target. But despite all of the stimulus, leaders have to stay locked in to win, painting the picture for their squads, reporting higher, marking the map, and getting shit done despite the chaos. It's in day 2 of beta, so I'll hold my criticisms for now. But this game is on track to do some things we've not seen before, and to do them exceptionally well. Very excited to see where this one goes.

The Union of Palestinian Women’s Committee is a feminist organization that was founded in 1980 and aims at empowering women and fighting all kinds of discrimination. The Union was targeted by the military occupation multiple times including in 2022 and most recently in 2024 when all their offices got bombed. Donate now: The Sameer Project recently collaborated with the UPWC to launch the “Stitch & Story Initiative” that aims to empower women in Southern Gaza through training in traditional Palestinian hand embroidery. The initiative seeks to enhance their financial independence and provide a secure source of income amid difficult economic conditions. Additionally, it will help women overcome the psychological challenges they face, alleviating mental burdens through creative activities that foster stability, hope, and self-confidence. The initiative also aims to preserve national identity by promoting Palestinian heritage and traditional attire. 15 women will be trained and each one will receive a training kit containing embroidery tools and materials to start producing embroidered items. The kit includes: Aida cloth, fabrics, colored silk threads, fabric scissors, thread, scissors, thimble, embroidery needles, marking pen, chalk, notebook and pen, and embroidery accessories. The Union will work closely with the women for 6 months not only on stitching but also marketing and selling their work. This project will cost $15,000. Stitching in Arabic is called “tatreez” a tradition that has been inherited for generations. Please support us in preserving our culture and increasing the agency of women during these difficult times. This moment is not only a proud achievement for all those involved, but it also stands as a powerful symbol of what African scientific leadership can achieve on the global stage. Under the visionary leadership of Prof Christian Happi Christian T. Happi, the team at ACEGID has made extraordinary strides in genomic research, particularly in addressing some of the most pressing infectious disease challenges of our time. The inauguration of the Institute reminds us that the work being done by the ACEGID team is a global public good, benefiting not only Nigeria and Africa but also contributing to global health security. The partnerships fostered between institutions and scientists from the Global North and South are a testament to our shared commitment to protecting and advancing human health. This collaboration has demonstrated what is possible when we work together to confront challenges that affect us all. During the Victorian era, some of the worst jobs were dangerous, unpleasant, and often exploited children. One of the most infamous was that of the chimney sweep. The job involved climbing up narrow, soot-filled chimneys to scrub them clean, which was extremely hazardous. Many chimney sweeps were young boys, sometimes as young as 3-5, who were forced to work in cramped, unhealthy conditions. The soot could cause serious health problems, and the physical toll of crawling through chimneys was brutal. In late 17th Century CE, England, the response to the Great Fire of London was to make chimneys much narrower. Children were employed to be human chimney sweeps. Child labor was common in the chimney sweeping industry for over 200 years because children were small enough to fit into the narrow flues. The typical age was between 5-10 years of age. Some as young as 4 years old. Master sweeps bought children from orphanages, took homeless young boys or from destitute parents. The work was brutal, filthy, and often fatal due to accidents and long-term health issues from soot inhalation. Philanthropists like the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury campaigned to end this practice, leading to legislation such as the Chimney Sweep Act of 1788, although the practice continued for some time. Chimney sweeps were used because there were no modern cleaning tools like today’s brushes or vacuum systems. Houses in the Victorian period relied on coal fires for heating, which would leave a buildup of soot in the chimneys. To ensure that homes were safe from chimney fires, someone had to climb up and clean the chimneys regularly. Unfortunately, this work was so physically demanding and risky that many children were forced into it as a way for their families to earn money. Over time, the public became more aware of the dangers of child labor, especially in jobs like chimney sweeping. Laws were eventually passed to protect children from these harmful jobs, including the Chimney Sweepers Act of 1875.
