Marlene Dietrich performs a delightfully bizarre number in the Pre-code “Blonde Venus” (1932) , co-starring Cary Grant and Herbert Marshall.

Okay I had to look this one up on IMDb. This is very early Cary Grant, 1932 being the first year of his movie career. This is before his films with Mae West. Herbert Marshall was probably a bigger star than Cary. But Marlene had been in pictures for many years at this point her career going back to at least 1923!

She can't sing, she can't dance, and she does a lousy Madeline Kahn impression. And she clearly wasn't in the original ape costume. Can't see why Cary was impressed.

So wrong on so many levels and yet, and yet so wonderful to look at.

First sighting on film of the Afro hairstyle. Only 35 years to wait till it became mainstream.

I love this scene, it impressed me a lot when I saw it for the first time when I was 13.....…...by the way, her partner was Gary Cooper, a handsome coward in real live....... I adore him till I was 25, when my closest friend was writing her doctorate for Berlin's University and discovered that he had been an activist collaborator during the witches hunting in Hollywood in the 50s. She didn't knew how tell me this terrible information, when she told me, I fall in a depression for at least one week, I felt so ashamed for having adore him like a saint, my hero was a coward. For us Spanish, being a coward or a traitor is much worst that being a thief, a lier or even a manipulator........... It happens to me very offen to say Cary Grant instead of Gary Cooper and vice versa.........Thank so much for this stonishing musical number...........🦊
