MARS ROVER FINALLY KNOWS WHERE IT IS For five years, NASA’s Perseverance rover has explored Mars while relying on Earth to precisely confirm its location. Earth is up to 140 million miles away. That means a 5 to 20 minute signal delay one way. Now NASA has enabled a system that lets the rover match surface images to high-resolution orbital maps. It can determine its position on its own. In real time. On another planet. This upgrade means less downtime, more driving, and more science. No waiting for instructions. No 40-minute “turn left at the big rock” exchange. It lays groundwork for the autonomy future human missions to Mars will require.
