Mars holds enough water ice that warming the planet would produce an ocean roughly one mile deep across 40% of its surface. Most of that ice sits under a dust mantle outside the polar caps. Geological evidence indicates liquid water once existed in volume. As the solar system cooled, the atmosphere thinned and the remaining water froze or was lost. That inventory is not theoretical. It is a measurable resource base for any sustained presence on Mars.

The video shows Xanthe Terra, a highland region near the equator, including the 62-mile-wide Da Vinci crater and Shalbatan Vallis, an 800-mile outflow channel that scientists believe once funneled water into a planet-wide ocean. The footage was created using a mosaic of images from the orbiter's High Resolution Stereo Camera combined with topography data to construct a 3D view. Mars Express has been studying the Red Planet for 20 years, creating the most comprehensive map of its atmosphere, examining moon Phobos in detail, and tracing features showing liquid water once flowed freely across the surface. On the first anniversary of the start of the current summit eruption (Episode 1), lava is fountaining once again at Kīlauea (Hawaiʻi ) -- Episode 39 has begun! The episode began at about 8:10 p.m. HST. Both the north and south vent are fountaining. As of about 8:45 p.m., lava fountains had reached 700 feet (210 meters) in height.
