Why Max Verstappen is the rightful champion of 2021 Apart from the fact that he had: - the most race wins - the most lap leads - the most podiums - the most poles Max also had a lot of bad luck. Here are 3 major bad luck moments where it was not his fault and he lost valuable points: - Baku 2021: left-rear tire failure. Max was winning it for sure and also had the fastest lap= missed 26 points. - Silverstone 2021: Max was the fastest the whole weekend and missed at least 25 points. - Hungary 2021: with half a car, 70 laps long, Max finished 9th = 2 points. There was a very good chance that Max would finish at least 2nd = missed 18 points. Due to these 3 major bad luck moments alone, Max missed out on at least 67 points. The last 3 races of 2021 would not have been that close at all. Disclaimer: I'm only talking about the major bad luck with huge consequences, where Max couldn't do anything about it himself. I'm not blaming someone.

Here is a good and balanced analysis by Peter Windsor. He reviewed Max's onboards and concluded that Max Verstappen did nothing wrong. The clear mistake was made by the FIA. They should have announced Lando's 5 seconds track limit penalty well before the incident, and then there would have been no issues.

What was a standard penalty in Mexico (2x 10s for Max) suddenly wasn't standard in Austin for Norris and Russell (5s). The difference: Johnny Herbert and Tim Mayer (McLaren's founder's son). A teenage Max was already schooling him in 2016 while Nico had the fastest car on the grid. Hamilton tried the whole “hold your ground” thing and even caused crashes, but Max did not flinch.
