Security forces in Iran have begun firing machine guns at protesters In the city of Marvdasht, gunfire was reportedly coming from the rooftops of a school and a bank. Iranian media report casualties. Videos have appeared online in which machine-gun bursts can be heard. Helicopters are circling above the city, and the internet has been partially shut down. Protests across the country are rapidly radicalizing. By January 3, demonstrations and unrest had spread to at least 18 provinces. Armed clashes are becoming more frequent: shootings have been reported in Fars, Lorestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. In Azna, protesters attacked a police station — three people were killed and 17 wounded. For now, centers of resistance are mostly in smaller cities, but tensions continue to rise. The protests began on December 28 in Tehran after the collapse of the rial and inflation reaching 52%. According to Reuters, these are the largest protests in Iran in the past three years, since the 2022 demonstrations sparked by the morality police killing 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.
