A rare pygmy hippopotamus has been born at Berlin Zoo — and it has been named “Bun” The baby was born on May 9 to female Debbie and male Tobi. At birth, the hippo weighed 5.9 kilograms, and has now grown to about 20 kilograms. Zoo staff are gradually getting the youngster used to water. Pygmy hippos lead a solitary lifestyle, so the mother will raise the calf on her own, Reuters reports. In the wild, there are only about 2,500 adult individuals of this species left.

A rare female pygmy hippo born at Berlin Zoo has been named Brötchen, the German word for “bread roll.” The calf, born on May 9, recently enjoyed her first outdoor bath under the watchful eye of her mother, Debbie. Zoo footage showed Brötchen wiggling her ears as she explored the water for the first time. At her latest weigh-in, Brötchen tipped the scales at 10 kilograms, or 22 pounds, nearly double her birth weight. The zoo said she is developing well and steadily gaining weight.
