13-year-old Willis "Blue Scuti" Gibson is the first human to beat Tetris. He became the first person to "beat" Tetris some three decades after its original release by playing the game's most extreme levels until it crashed. Previously, only bots powered by artificial intelligence had forced the game on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), to its “kill screen”, where its signature blocks are falling so fast that the game itself can’t continue. Blue Scuti’s winning strategy was a culmination of the technique that younger players have been developing in recent years. These newer strategies, like “hypertapping” and later “rolling,” emerged in 2016 and 2020 respectively, allowing players to operate the NES controller even faster than the buttons by tapping the underside of the controller.
