Iran exports oil, but it also imports gasoline and diesel. Iran lacks the ability to refine enough of their own oil into gasoline and diesel. So very soon Iran will be running out of fuel everywhere.

The strategy is clear for Prime Minister Takaichi: she needs Japan to help with the Strait of Hormuz. They import ~70% of their oil from the region, and they cannot drop the price themselves. So the sooner they make a deal, the faster they will recover. They don’t even need to provide any technology, because the US military and surrounding players have that all covered. They just need to provide them the insurance - and I’m estimating it’s around $4B monthly - to keep the peace. Same goes for other countries heavily relying on oil imports from the region. Just imagine if China joins in? That would be a remarkable result!

The Kharg Island situation, which handles 90% of the exports, is under intense pressure. [Iran had] to start turning the valve down on the wells. The problem is that those are very old legacy fields... those fields have water issues, they have pressure issues, they have migration issues with them… Obviously, it's going to have a long-term impact on their ability to ramp up to another 3 million barrels a day."
