The persecution of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh took centre stage in Australia today as protest rallies were held in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Several hundred attended the Sydney rally. Over a dozen representatives of Australian organisations as well as politicians addressed the event. Australian Hindu Association President – Amendra Singh urged the Australian government to impose sanctions on Bangladesh ‘unless and until the human rights of minorities are restored.’ He described the current situation in Bangladesh under Mohammed Yunus as a ‘pogrom against minorities.’ Other speakers included leaders of the the Australian Federation for Bangladeshi Minorities, Ramyavaran Vasu from the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh and Sai Paravastu from the Hindu Council. The Melbourne rally also attracted several hundred protestors. There too, multiple speakers slammed the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh. The Perth protest is in progress.

A very disturbing and alarming piece of news is coming from the English Bazar area of Malda! According to local sources, for the past few days, chaos and hooliganism had been occurring in Hindu-majority rural areas of Amriti Sekendarpur, allegedly carried out by the "Shanti Bahini" in protest of the Waqf Amendment Act. In the midst of this, Hindu youths were taking turns keeping night watch to prevent any large-scale attacks. However, last night, radical fundamentalist jihadists launched a brutal attack on these night watchmen. As a result, several were seriously injured. One Hindu youth, Shibu Mondal (age 27), was attacked with a sharp weapon and died on the spot! It is being reported that local police officers are dismissing this as a mere robbery attempt! At this moment, I urge the West Bengal Police and the DGP West Bengal to thoroughly investigate the truth of this heinous incident, to act beyond political pressure and religious lines, and to take immediate action. The administration must ensure exemplary punishment for those involved in this brutal murder. No longer will any attacks on innocent Hindus be tolerated on the sacred soil of West Bengal.

But when only one faith i.e Hindus are mocked, dehumanised, and openly threatened with “eradication,” there is studied silence. Is this what they call “secularism”? BJP/NDA will continue to expose this dangerous hypocrisy where appeasement politics replaces basic decency and sends a message that hatred against Hindus is acceptable. Our constitution guarantees equal rights to life and opportunity. Every state government and every elected representative takes an oath to respect the Constitution. When such open hatred is not challenged, it leaves Hindu believers feeling vulnerable and intimidated. And when a sitting Minister of the INDI alliance uses such language, it is no longer fringe hate, but it becomes state-sanctioned hostility against the Hindu faith. “Met Police can go to hell.” Palestine Action and its supporters have sent a clear message: they have nothing but contempt for Metropolitan Police frontline officers. When a group of extremists takes to the streets to defend a soon-to-be proscribed terrorist group and protest against those who risk their lives to keep our streets safe, it is a frighteningly clear indication that something has gone very wrong in this country. The authorities have a lot to answer for. This ban on Palestine Action — as called for by CAA and others — is a good start, but it should have happened a long time ago, as should bans on these kinds of protests. This must be the start of a clampdown on lawlessness and extremism if it is to be of any consequence.

But this raises an important question about your role. For a long time, in your own state of West Bengal, radical jihadists have been relentlessly persecuting innocent Hindus in Murshidabad. Fleeing with their lives, many Hindus have been forced to abandon their homes, practically becoming refugees in their own land. Their possessions have been looted, and their homes set on fire. Despite witnessing these horrific atrocities against innocent Bengali Hindus, the police administration initially took no action. In fact, it was only after court intervention that central forces were deployed to stabilize the situation. Yet even after all this time, you have not visited Murshidabad, nor have you stood by the victims. From the highest administrative position in the state, the few comments you have made on the Hindu massacre in Murshidabad have left the persecuted Hindus of Bengal disheartened and increasingly anxious. The people of Bengal are beginning to understand where your real priorities lie! Therefore, I urge you—please turn your attention to Murshidabad. Stand beside the anxious Hindus there. While the Government of India is responding to the Kashmir situation with wartime urgency and will continue working to eradicate terrorism, it is now your responsibility to stop the politics of appeasement.
