Another masterpiece turning 30 this year... one of the best turn-based strategy games I ever played: Master of Orion II (Simtex, 1996). A huge improvement over the already excellent original from 1993, Master of Orion II gives sci-fi/strategy nerds everything they need: colonizing planets, terraforming, building infrastructure, researching a gazillion ships, weapons, shields and other tech, diplomacy with alien races, epic space battles, and - of course - black hole generators to swallow capital ships in one go! The graphics were excellent, the intro got you hyped right from the start, different paths to victory (with varying end credit cutscenes), a slightly eerie/spacey soundtrack, and almost endless replayability made this game near perfect. It truly deserves a spot among the great strategy games of the 90s alongside Civilization and Alpha Centauri.

UFO: Enemy Unknown, also known as X-COM: UFO Defense in the US, was one of the coolest games of the 90s. MicroProse published this sci-fi strategy classic in 1994, and it became an absolute cult hit. The music and sound effects still give me nerd chills - this game just oozes epicness. You’re in charge of the defense and research organization Extraterrestrial Combat (X-COM). You start with basic tech and weapons but gradually learn more about the alien invasion and their technology. Virtually all reviews gave it high 90% ratings, and Computer Gaming World called it the #1 sleeper hit of all time. While RTS games took a much bigger market share (think StarCraft, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer...), I always had a soft spot for the "less hectic" and almost soothing type of turn-based games. Among the greats from the 90s era, I think the Heroes of Might and Magic series is among the very top. The incredibly beautiful, detailed, and vibrant design, the iconic soundtrack, the classic gameplay - all that made for perfect late night sessions that usually went on for way too long because "just one more turn... ok, maybe one more... oh dang, it's 3 in the morning". If you've been there, you know. Heroes of Might and Magic is one of the longest living series in gaming history, now entering its 31st year, with the first release in 1995 and latest release in 2025 (Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era). The intros of some 90s games with their epic monologues and bombastic music still gets me to this day! I feel that among the legends like Dune 2, Age of Empires and Command & Conquer, some games have gotten lost in the shuffle a bit - at least to a degree. One of those is Total Annihilation (1997), a groundbreaking real-time strategy game by Cavedog Entertainment, led by Chris Taylor. Interesting note: The producer of the game was none other than Ron Gilbert (the genius behind Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island). Players build massive armies, managing streaming metal and energy resources, limitless, gathered via extractors, for factories churning out tanks, aircraft, and nukes. Epic battles feature thousands of units, realistic physics, radar jamming, and Jeremy Soule's orchestral score. It has a 96% approval rating on Steam, so it shows that even today - almost 30 years later - TA still has a strong following and active mod community. It also shows that a selected group of those 90s games found the perfect balance between cocept, gameplay, difficulty and replayability, a true testament to greatness

The 90s were a great decade for turn-based strategy games. Civilization, Colonization, Master of Orion, Heroes of Might and Magic, Warlords... and the list goes on and on. One game that feels underappreciated when looking back on that era is Ascendancy (The Logic Factory, 1995). What stood out right from the start was the design/style. Ascendancy not only looked very different, it also had a very novel approach to the tech tree (which was less linear compared to other strategy games), a unique ship design, and a well balanced and complex diplomacy system. The overall goal is to lead your alien race to victory, through colonization of other planets, building a fleet, exploring, and researching new technologies (incl. weapon and shield systems). The music is another aspect that differentiates Ascendancy from other games of the time. Hard to describe it other than "spacey, soothing, a little haunting at times" - if you played the game you know what I mean. It was fitting the game's vibe perfectly. The Logic Factory made one more game after this one: The Tone Rebellion - which flopped (sadly). So, essentially they;re one of those rare "one hit wonder" game studios that only hardcore fans will remember. If you liked Master of Orion, you should give Ascendancy a try.

It had that distinct dystopian look and feel, incredibly dark and eerie music and sound effects (the howling wind, echoing footsteps...), and a highly immersive story - the intro alone is a masterpiece, and puts you into instant survival mode. Classic RPGs were not that popular at the time anymore (RTS and shooters had taken over), so having the guts to create such a massive world almost felt like a spark of life being injected into the genre. Fallout spawned countless sequels (and a TV series). If you like RPGs, I am sure you gave Fallout a try back then - and if not, do it now, it's worth it.

Panzer General (SSI, 1994) didn't quite have the massive manual that some MicroProse strategy games had - this one had "only" around 60 pages - but one of the biggest appeals was its simplified design and interface compared to earlier SSI titles, which were rooted in complex war/strategy simulations, appealing to a smaller niche of players. Panzer General's structure was much simpler compared to SSI's traditional deep, simulation-heavy titles like those from Gary Grigsby (such as Panzer Strike, Battlegroup or Typhoon of Steel), but this move opened up their games to a more mainstream audience - and ultimately making Panzer General a commercial success. Sequels such as Fantasy General (1996) or Allied General (1995) were based on the same engine. I always liked turn-based strategy games (Battle Isle, Master of Orion, Civilization), so Panzer General was one of the many classics of the 90s, arguably the peak decade for such games.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (1998) was a brilliant game by Pyro Studios, set in World War II. You command elite Allied soldiers, like a Green Beret, a sniper, or a spy on stealth missions behind Nazi lines. The game allows you to use unique skills for sabotage, assassinations, and escapes while you have to keep in mind the line of sight of enemy forces and patrols. It sold over 1 million copies and had several sequels. According to Wiki this is also the most successful game series ever made by a Spanish team. It is rather slow paced (which I like), highly tactical and also featuring extremely beautiful graphics with an incredible love and attention to detail. And while most non-German games that include digitized German speech sound like Monty Python, this one had very realistic sound-bits. Commandoes was one of the games we played in our late 90s LAN sessions, and - unlike a real commando - there were a lot of loud debates on the next (correct) move, some friendly banter, and the occassional "oh shit" moments.

Commandoes was one of the games we played in our late 90s LAN sessions, and - unlike a real commando - there were a lot of loud debates on the next (correct) move, some friendly banter, and the occassional "oh shit" moments.

Sauron wasn’t truly evil at his core; after all, he was a Maia just like Gandalf. He believed that the real evil in Middle-earth was disorder and chaos. His purpose in creating the One Ring and the other Rings of Power wasn’t to become invincible, but to end chaos by controlling the other races and enforcing order. Men, Elves, and Dwarves couldn’t get along with one another and even within their own peoples, conflict and disorder were constant. So what do you think? Was Sauron actually right in this regard?
