Rules and enforcement shape what player do best in an era. Here is 1980’s 7’4 Ralph Sampson. He was super athletic, he could run the floor as good or better than Wemby, he could dribble, etc. Yet he was never as good as Hakeem nor ever a first team all-NBA player because the game back then incentivized post play for bigs. This is a great example of how skilled players today might not do as good in the past simply because there were different skills needed in the game. Plenty of other examples like this such as Derrick Coleman in the 90’s making only one all star despite being a 6’10 PF/C that could dribble and pass and had a decent outside shot. But the game incentivized post play for the bigs and Coleman only made one all-star.

Most are dominate at 1 or 2 things. Cooper Kupp literally does everything at a dominating level.
