On the left is the general method; on the right is a special case. Anyone skilled in algebra (& multiplication tables) will naturally pick the quickest approach. It has nothing to do with Europe or the USA.

In India, we simply answer x = 2 by looking at the question.

I am a Mathematician in Germany (what lies in Europe). First rule is simplify. Second: write | to explain, what you do. So "we" in Europe would write it down like: 9(x+7)=81 |:9 x+7=9 |-7 x=2.

No. Half of the Americans would not know what they are supposed to do. They don’t know what “solving an equation” means. The other half used to punch a calculator with different numbers for x (1,2,…), until they got it. Now they would ask ChatGPT (or some other AI) to solve it.

The left one can solve every case. The right one is not always works and requires an understanding of the question pattern.

Just to point out that both the person who made the video and the one who wrote this post don't understand algebra. Axioms and formal rules are universal and absolute, not cultural or geographic styles. Also, they should have used numbers that aren't multiples of each other.

You can pass the 9 which is multiplying x+7 to the other side dividing 81/9. The rest is simple. It's not Europe vS America, it depends if the numbers are multiples. The left method is the the base to understand how to solve more complicated equations.

I learned the "European". The "American" works great if the equation actually contains numbers to make it convenient. Otherwise it's useless.

Nobody in Europe would resolve it this way when you see that you can simplify both sides. When it is more complicated ok. But this one you count in mind...

This is factually true. Americans always believe in #shortcuts but at the same time, they ensure that the shortcuts are reasonable and completely logical.

In Europe, one would do this simple algebra without the need for pen and paper

Maths is not defined by countries, flags, or people. Maths is just maths—a beautiful way that numbers perform together. The fact that we as humans can establish methods to interact with numbers is truly amazing in itself.
