Matt Damon sat down with Jimmy Fallon looking like a man who just realized time is a thief. Fallon asks the usual: “How are the kids?” Matt smiles. Everybody’s great. Then he drops it. “We have one going to college this year.” Fallon leans back. “It’s happening.” Matt nods....

Matt Smith walked onto Fallon looking like he’d just stepped off a dragon… and immediately started talking about how much he hates the wig. Fallon holds up a still of Daemon Targaryen’s long silver hair. “Everyone kind of has this hair.” Smith doesn’t even hesitate. “Takes ages to put the wig on. It’s a f***ing nightmare.” Then Fallon asks about High Valyrian. Smith sits up, locks in, and just starts speaking it on live television like it’s nothing: “Ñuhys dēma kesy ñuhys dēmavos māzīlariot sinilus.” The studio loses it. Fallon tries to repeat it, butchered. Smith laughs so hard he has to stand up, grab Fallon’s hand, and lean over the desk. Fallon: “What did I just say?” Smith, deadpan: “It means… one day this chair will be mine.” Fallon freezes. The audience explodes. Then they get to the dragon. Caraxes. The Blood Wyrm. Smith calls him “an avatar of Daemon” and “really grumpy.” How do they film it? They build a 20-foot plinth in the air. It’s basically a bucking bronco from a pub. Smith has to ride the thing for hours. “After 10 hours you’re like… get me the f**k off.” Fallon: “You gotta watch your mouth on this show.” Smith covers his face, still laughing. “Sorry, America.” Wigs that take forever. A dead language he can speak on command. A dragon that is basically him with scales. And a late-night host who just got told, in High Valyrian, that his chair is next. Daemon Targaryen didn’t come to play.

Matt Damon reveals Christopher Nolan wanted him to look lean and strong for his role in The Odyssey , says he stopped eating gluten and drinking beer Matt Damon: “And we were talking, we were just catching up about the kids and everything, and then about fifteen minutes into the call, he said, ‘Oh, I’m thinking of going back to work.’ And I’d like to offer you the central role.” “And he goes, ‘Don’t you wanna hear what it is?’ and I was like, ‘Sure.’ And he goes, ‘It’s a two word pitch, The Odyssey.’” “Yeah, it was like my heart skipped a beat, ’cause it’s just such an incredible part to play for an actor, of course. Of course. The role of a lifetime.” On the physical transformation: Interviewer: “From the time you found out that you were playing this role to the first day of rolling frame… how much time did you have?” Matt Damon: “Six months.” Interviewer: “How much weight did you have to lose or gain?” Matt Damon: “It was lose. He didn’t say specifically. He said, ‘I just want him to look lean and strong, like somebody who’s a veteran of the Trojan War and can handle himself.’ It just kind of took over my life.” “Every single day… it felt more like an athlete’s regimen. Everything’s weighed. Everything’s very, very intentional.” On the diet change: Interviewer: “I heard that you stopped eating gluten?” Matt Damon : “Yeah it turned out I didn’t know gluten’s in everything rice, potatoes, bread, pasta… all the stuff that we love. I had to give up beer too. That was tough. But I just felt so much better.”
