There’s a great moment in The Town: right after robbing an armored truck, the crew is switching cars when they suddenly come face-to-face with a lone cop. He sees them — then looks away. According to Ben Affleck, this was based on a real story. He explains: “For The Town, I went down and just went through all the prisons out there in Massachusetts — federal prisons, state prisons — and sat down and talked to guys who robbed trucks and banks… I’m in Walpole, or I’m in the prison in Dedham or whatever, and some guy said - after talking for two hours - I was like, “Has anything just fucking weird ever happened? Or fucked up? Anything you remember?” And he was like, “Yeah, one time, we were coming out of this thing. We robbed this truck, and we had the switch car. We drove around the corner, and we pull up and we get out — fucking guns and the masks, the whole thing — and we look over and there’s this cop sitting there doing construction duty.” I was like, “Oh shit. What happened?” “You know, he looked at us, we looked at him, he looked the other way.” And I was like, “Really?” He goes, “Yeah. He didn’t want to end up on the wall at the VFW.” I was like, “I’m putting that in the movie - He didn’t want to end up on the wall at the VFW.” It was a great line. It was such a simple explanation for, “What do you think he did?” And why. That’s exactly what it would have been. That guy, next day, his picture would have been up at the wall at the VFW. He knew it, and everybody knew it.”

Seth Rogen reveals The Interview used a real tiger because the CGI was too expensive, then the tiger wrangler started asking terrifying questions I did a movie called The Interview about North Korea, and there’s a scene with a tiger. I directed the movie with my partner, and we wrote this scene where there’s a tiger. I thought in my head it would be CG. Life of Pi had come out recently, and I was like, “We’ll get the Life of Pi tiger. Put us down for one Life of Pi.” They were like, “We can’t afford that at all. We’ve got to get a real tiger.” I was like, “Oh God.” So we found a tiger wrangler in Calgary, and we had a call with him. It was so funny because he was the least confidence inspiring person you’ve ever spoken to in your entire life. I asked, “Where’d you get the tiger?” He said, “From a stripper.” We were like, “What?” He said, “She had a tiger cub as part of her act, and it got too big, so she had to get rid of it.” We asked, “Where does a stripper get a tiger?” He said, “It’s easier than you think. You could get one.” We had sent him the script, and he said, “Let’s go over the scene. You’re not shooting this at night, are you?” I said, “Yeah, the scene is set at night.” He said, “Ooh.” I asked, “Why is that bad?” He said, “Well, they hunt at night.” He asked, “Can it be during the day?” We said, “No. Is that okay?” There was a long pause, and he said, “Yeah, it’s okay. I think it’s okay.” Then he asked, “It won’t be in a big open area, will it?” We said, “Yeah, it’s basically a giant meadow.” He said, “Ooh.” We asked, “Is that bad?” He said, “Well, if there’s a deer or something, they will go after it.” We said, “That’s bad. In it, she revealed a fun anecdote with X-Files creator Chris Carter, on the shooting of The X-Files second movie, I Want to Believe. “Chris told me that there was a particular way that we used to speak in the show that wasn’t a normal rhythm and syntaxe, it was slightly backwards, which felt like it was almost part of the cryptic aspect of the series. And it wasn’t until we were working on the second feature; I was sitting in a parked vehicle waiting to shoot and our showrunner and creator Chris Carter came up to me, who was directing the feature, and he looked at my sides, where my lines were, and he said: Look, no widows! and I said: What are you talking about?! He said: No, no widows. On the little paragraphs that each character has, the words went all the way to the end, with the period, so you didn’t end halfway through that line, it was a perfect rectangle. So, the dialogue was designed visually… for nine years.”
