Matt Damon’s filmography is absurdly deep. Take for example True Grit, an outstanding Coen Brothers film that probably doesn’t even crack Damon’s 5 best films ever. Damon’s excellent here as is the entire cast, which is loaded. Imagine if The Odyssey is anywhere near the quality of True Grit....

Matt Damon has said repeatedly over the course of promoting The Odyssey that making Christopher Nolan’s latest film was the most physically demanding role Damon’s ever handled. I find that surprising considering Damon was literally Jason Bourne. The Bourne franchise has never and may never receive the attention it deserves. Damon’s physicality in this role is off the charts.

The Last Duel is Matt Damon’s best film of the decade that was not directed by Christopher Nolan. It would be hard for any film to top Oppenheimer or The Odyssey, but Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has aged stupendously. This deserves a re-release in theaters at some point. Damon is electric in this movie.

The Bourne Ultimatum is one of the best action films ever made. There, I said it. I like to think that all the things Matt Damon learned in playing Jason Bourne helped him on the set of The Odyssey. Seeing Damon’s physicality as Odysseus definitely reminded me of some of the things he pulled off as Bourne. It’s also another excuse to fire up the original Bourne trilogy.

Elysium is one of the more interesting films Matt Damon’s ever taken on & it’s actually a project I really enjoy, despite the naysayers. I think this film explores themes of environmentalism with a lot of thought, which had to have motivated Damon to do this. It’s worth watching.

School Ties changed the trajectory of Matt Damon’s career, not to mention a handful of other young actors from that generation. Damon, who famously did not get a part in Dead Poets Society, nabbed a part as the racist asshole in School Ties & never really looked back. Damon is an excellent villain. Which is why seeing him as Odysseus felt refreshing.

Intolerable Cruelty might not be one of the best films from the Coen Brothers, but it’s underrated & absolutely hilarious. I think Catherine Zeta-Jones steals this entire film, but Clooney is also excellent. Clooney works so well with the Coens- they bring out Clooney’s best.

Insomnia didn’t make my Christopher Nolan 10 Best Films list. But that speaks to how great Nolan’s filmography is - it’s not a slight against Insomnia, which is a damn good movie & a quality Al Pacino performance. This has to be considered one of Pacino’s best films in the last 30 years. Robin Williams is also outstanding playing against-type as the bad guy here. The point I’m getting at? Christopher Nolan’s never made a bad film.

Tom Hanks turns 70 today, which is crazy. Hanks has been around my entire life & as a seminal part of Cinema history. I strongly believe Cast Away is the best Hanks performance of all-time, even though he won Oscars for Forrest Gump & Philadelphia & even though he’s outstanding in Saving Private Ryan. But Hanks’ ability to hold the screen for the entire film here, by himself- with no cast members (Wilson aside)- is one of the great displays of acting this century. Not only that, consider the physical transformation Hanks underwent here. He’s as method as they come in that sense. Cheers to many, many more. 🎂

If No Country for Old Men isn’t on your 10 Best Films of the 21st Century Ballot, I question the ballot. There’s a lot of room for disagreement between ballots, but not this. It cannot be argued that the Coen Brothers’ magnum opus is one of the best films of this century.
