Matt Damon’s filmography is absurdly deep. Take for example True Grit, an outstanding Coen Brothers film that probably doesn’t even crack Damon’s 5 best films ever. Damon’s excellent here as is the entire cast, which is loaded. Imagine if The Odyssey is anywhere near the quality of True Grit....

The fact that Hailee Steinfeld didn't win an Oscar for her spot on portrayal of Mattie Ross remains one of the all time worst miscarriages of movie justice.

The Coens already made the Odyssey. And the soundtrack launched a renaissance of roots music.

I don’t know what was a bigger costume surprise: Matt Damon having a cowboy mustache here or shaving his head for Elysium & Eurotrip

Damon is usually the worst actor in any movie he stars in.

The Martian is Ridley Scott’s best film post-Gladiator. Some may argue it’s Black Hawk Down, but The Martian is a definitively better film because of Matt Damon’s performance, who is a brilliant muse for Scott. I still think Scott is capable of directing films of this quality.

Matt Damon’s performance in The Martian is the closest he’s ever been to winning an Oscar for acting…that was until The Odyssey. I love The Martian but Damon’s performance in Nolan’s latest clears anything he’s ever done & should put him in the driver’s seat for best actor. Also worth noting? My guy Ridley Scott is back in theaters in just a few weeks.

Given that it’s Ridley Scott Week, I think now is as good of a time as any to revisit The Last Duel. Written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, I think this is one of Scott’s better films in the last 15 years largely because the writing is so strong. That’s without mentioning that the entire cast is also excellent. I really, really enjoy Damon’s performance here. This film is proof that even in his 80s, Ridley still has his fastball.

Matt Damon has said repeatedly over the course of promoting The Odyssey that making Christopher Nolan’s latest film was the most physically demanding role Damon’s ever handled. I find that surprising considering Damon was literally Jason Bourne. The Bourne franchise has never and may never receive the attention it deserves. Damon’s physicality in this role is off the charts.

The Coen Brothers have an astonishingly deep filmography. The fact that True Grit isn’t brought up more is proof. This movie is a masterpiece. It released not long after No Country for Old Men, which may contribute to the fact it’s not talked about more culturally. But it’s great

Matt Damon didn’t even receive an Oscar nomination for The Departed, which is relevant as his stars in The Odyssey next week, a film that might earn Damon his first acting Oscar. Damon’s quietly been snubbed by the Academy a handful of times over the course of his career & this might be the most egregious. He holds this entire film together along with Leo.

The Last Duel is Matt Damon’s best film of the decade that was not directed by Christopher Nolan. It would be hard for any film to top Oppenheimer or The Odyssey, but Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has aged stupendously. This deserves a re-release in theaters at some point. Damon is electric in this movie.

Matt Damon is back in theaters in a matter of days- this time leading a Christopher Nolan film- and it’s grounds for revisiting Damon’s entire career. The Rainmaker is one of a handful of elite ‘90s films Damon gave us & it’s an awesome collaboration between Damon & Francis Ford Coppola. I love legal thrillers & this is as good as they come.

The Bourne Ultimatum is one of the best action films ever made. There, I said it. I like to think that all the things Matt Damon learned in playing Jason Bourne helped him on the set of The Odyssey. Seeing Damon’s physicality as Odysseus definitely reminded me of some of the things he pulled off as Bourne. It’s also another excuse to fire up the original Bourne trilogy.

The Coen brothers built TRUE GRIT (2010) around a 14-year-old newcomer, and Hailee Steinfeld never once feels overshadowed by Jeff Bridges or Matt Damon. Mattie Ross is so self-assured from her very first scene that the film instantly belongs to her.

Elysium is one of the more interesting films Matt Damon’s ever taken on & it’s actually a project I really enjoy, despite the naysayers. I think this film explores themes of environmentalism with a lot of thought, which had to have motivated Damon to do this. It’s worth watching.

School Ties changed the trajectory of Matt Damon’s career, not to mention a handful of other young actors from that generation. Damon, who famously did not get a part in Dead Poets Society, nabbed a part as the racist asshole in School Ties & never really looked back. Damon is an excellent villain. Which is why seeing him as Odysseus felt refreshing.

The Paper is a great Robert Duvall film. Directed by Ron Howard, this film tells the story of New York City tabloid newspaper, in which Duvall is the man in charge. The entire cast here is loaded & it’s definitely one of Ron Howard’s better films. We don’t get films like this now

Here is one of the best film trailers ever made. It’s for Albert Brooks’ REAL LIFE (1979). There are no clips of the film, there is no summary of the entire plot. However, the trailer gives you the absolute flavor of the film. And if you like that flavor, you will love that excellent film.

Intolerable Cruelty might not be one of the best films from the Coen Brothers, but it’s underrated & absolutely hilarious. I think Catherine Zeta-Jones steals this entire film, but Clooney is also excellent. Clooney works so well with the Coens- they bring out Clooney’s best.

Mila (2001) is a rare Star Cinema film that placed activism at the center, probably one of the most progressive films of its era. In this scene, Mila wonders if a lifetime of sacrifice ever returns to you, which is what activism is: commitment as continuing even without proof.

Insomnia didn’t make my Christopher Nolan 10 Best Films list. But that speaks to how great Nolan’s filmography is - it’s not a slight against Insomnia, which is a damn good movie & a quality Al Pacino performance. This has to be considered one of Pacino’s best films in the last 30 years. Robin Williams is also outstanding playing against-type as the bad guy here. The point I’m getting at? Christopher Nolan’s never made a bad film.

Godzilla Minus Zero is just another reason why 2026 is such a monumental year for Cinema: consider all the amazing movies that have already dropped this year (The Odyssey, Project Hail Mary, Spider-Man, The Invite, etc.) and consider how many more big releases we still have (Dune: Part 3, Doomsday, Digger, etc.) and then factor in Minus Zero. If Minus Zero is even half the quality of Godzilla Minus One, which was one of the best films of 2023, we’re in for an absolute rollercoaster. What a year for film.

Heat’s entire opening sequence is the greatest opening to any film I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure if this is constitutes just one opening “scene” per se, but the entire opening heist is imprinted on in my mind for the rest of time. I pray to God that Heat 2 doesn’t fall in the “bullshit legacy sequels” bucket & turns into something meaningful, even if it’s not as good as this film here.

Tom Hanks turns 70 today, which is crazy. Hanks has been around my entire life & as a seminal part of Cinema history. I strongly believe Cast Away is the best Hanks performance of all-time, even though he won Oscars for Forrest Gump & Philadelphia & even though he’s outstanding in Saving Private Ryan. But Hanks’ ability to hold the screen for the entire film here, by himself- with no cast members (Wilson aside)- is one of the great displays of acting this century. Not only that, consider the physical transformation Hanks underwent here. He’s as method as they come in that sense. Cheers to many, many more. 🎂
