Started using React Native two days ago and immediately fell down a tab-bar rabbit hole. I’d seen Instagram and Revolut collapse their tab bars on scroll while keeping every icon visible. I wanted that without giving up real iOS Liquid Glass. Turns out iOS 26’s public API can’t express that state. UITabBarMinimizeBehavior is an enum of when, not what. With onScrollDown, UIKit minimizes the bar to the active tab alone. There’s no parameter controlling what survives. So most implementations rebuild the visible bar as a custom component. Some use genuine glass materials, but the real UITabBar is gone and with it, the native selection capsule: that little blob that moves like a drop of water between tabs. You can reproduce it with separate springs on the leading and trailing edges. I didn’t want a reproduction. I wanted UIKit’s. Then I remembered a Flutter app i built some months back which uses cupertino_native. Flutter runs the app while a platform-view bridge renders a real UIKit UITabBar. Finding expo-glass-tabs clarified the compact geometry I wanted. The two ideas clicked: why not bridge a real UITabBar into React Native? Here’s the trick: a standalone UITabBar has no UITabBarController managing it, so Apple’s minimization rule never applies. That means I can control its frame and items myself. Expo Router still owns navigation and screen lifecycle. React Native detects scroll direction. Swift removes and restores the real item labels, recentres the icons and animates the native bar’s size. All five icons remain visible. The result keeps Apple’s Liquid Glass, water-drop capsule, hit testing and accessibility, while adding a compact state its public API doesn’t provide. One gotcha tho: detaching the bar means reimplementing everything the controller previously gave you for free. Active-tab reselect scrolling was one example

My initial problem with Liquid Glass was that it was terrible for accessibility despite how beautiful it looks it certain places. There is literally only one way to solve this readability issue – make the glass frosted/opaque. And from the public backlash that Apple received it was pretty obvious that it was a matter of time before they made this change. The problem now is that when you make it opaque, it barely looks any different from iOS 18, yet it keeps eating up resources and draining your battery. 3 betas in, and I still feel like this design direction was a big mistake.

✨Introducing YesCheff is a web app that helps you learn, cook, and enjoy your favorite recipes through step-by-step cooking guides built from real YouTube content. You can even use your own YouTube links. A small but special project where I brought all my capabilities together, from design (brand & product) to animation, and development. This project came from exploring how Al models parse data into frontend components and the development of generative interfaces. I designed and developed the structure through React components (HTML, CSS, JS) for the frontend and Node.js for the backend. This is a testament of how one could develop digital products in a less frustrating and more flexible way with the use of Al, particularly when it comes to getting the styling and functionality right. I'm not an engineer, but I rebuilt Savee — the app a million designers use Friday, 5pm. I asked Claude how much work it would take to rebuild our iOS app fully native. It had been sitting on our someday list for years, waiting for a team we didn't have. I stopped waiting and built it myself — a designer with Claude Code, one feature at a time. Claude wrote the Swift; I answered with the feedback designers give: two points left, lighter tint, that corner radius is wrong. Another round. And another. 33 days from the first prompt to live on the App Store. 1,078 prompts. Three releases in the first week. Something changed for designers. The distance between an idea and shipping used to be a team, a budget, and a year. Now it's a conversation. Savee 3.0 is out. It's the app I always wanted us to have 🚀
