Magneto was created by Jewish writers as a Holocaust survivor. His whole arc is about trauma, survival and refusing to let history repeat.

Yes. He 100% IS a villain. Especially in the X-Men films. Half-assed moral relativism doesn’t mean you can become a terrorist & hurt innocents, as he intends to do in every single X-Men film, because you were once victimized. That’s the key difference between a hero & a villain. A hero experiences trauma & chooses to help everyone they can, a villain convinces themselves that their own trauma now excuses any action they take, even preventative ones. A villain can have a “noble” goal. Lots of despots & horrible people in our real world have “idealistic” or “noble” goals & commit horrible atrocities in the pursuit of them. There are also wildly different eras in terms of Magneto: Silver Age bullying psycho, John Byrne evil Bastard villain, Claremont villain striving for redemption (my own favorite take on him) where his background was established, 90’s full blown genocidal terrorist, Morrison Terrorist Twat, & the movie & modern version: Hypocritical Prick Magneto. Hypocritical Prick Magneto is what happens when they slam together the genocidal terrorist & the Claremont version & we end up w/a villain that spouts noble ideals based on past trauma & uses that as an excuse to hurt anyone that defies him. It lets people who want to claim victimhood & excuse their own bad behavior praise him & make ridiculous posts like this that say that the Terrorist is Right. Which of course he isn’t. The whole point of the X-Men, stated in the very first issue, is that they’re functionally an Anti-Terrorism unit. Recruited & designed by Xavier to stop terrorists, Magneto specifically in X-Men #1, from committing terrorist acts & damaging humanities view of mutants. That mission statement grew to include stopping human terrorists like the creators of the Sentinels as well, but it’s always been their role. This is why classic heroic tales are important. So that idiocy like this didn’t become widespread.

Having sympathy for a villain doesn't make them less of a villain. A character can have righteous anger and have been a victim, and they still can become just as bad as their oppressors. You have matured from the 3-4 yo understanding of villains to the 5-6 yo understanding.

No. Magneto is definitely a villain. But villainy and evil are complex and multifaceted phenomena with no simple answers. Evil doesn't exist in a void. It's created through life experiences. People aren't born evil. They're made evil through trauma and adverse life events. It's possible to be evil and a villain and STILL be a victim. Those things aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, more often than not, they walk hand-in-hand. Postmodern villains aren't more compelling because they're better-written. They're more compelling because they're essentially human and their evil is understandable and even rationalizable to us. They're also human beings instead of merely walking, talking archetypes. That's also what makes them scarier, since their particular kind of evil makes us realize that we too could fall from grace like they have, and experience same kind of corruption if the circumstances are right. By extending compassion to villains, we also become more sensitive to and aware of the capacity for evil in our own souls.

I'm really disturbed by how many people nowadays seem to celebrate unethical and violent means as a way to achieve noble ends. I don't believe that's possible. I think the means by which we achieve things matter, and that a positive future is not achievable unethically.

Maturing is realising Magneto is what a well written, complex character with a well told, strong back story looks like. A more realistic interpretation of what a villain could be, not just good or evil, but driven by experiences and making bad decisions for what they see as good reasons.
