High altitude performance and maximum speed was inferior but the Spey offered better range thanks to higher efficiency as well as a significantly shorter take-off run and acceleration at lower levels, it was arguably better optimized for carrier operations

Eso ayudaba porque Reino Unido tenía menos cisternas (Victor K.2) que EE.UU., donde el reabastecimiento en vuelo estaba muy optimizado. Pero el motivo principal no fue solo eso. El Spey se eligió sobre todo para operar desde los portaaviones británicos más pequeños: despegue un 30% más corto, mejor aceleración y empuje a baja altitud, y mejor rendimiento en misiones de bajo nivel. No fue un “downgrade”. Fue una adaptación: perdían algo de velocidad y techo máximo, pero ganaban en lo que más les importaba (portaviones + alcance + industria británica). El J79 era superior en altitud alta e interceptación pura.
