People want to engage with fandoms and the things outside of the actual piece of art but i would actually argue that this isn't even a late phenomenon. I've been into touhou since 2011 and even back then you had a ton of people who didn't play the actual shmups.

“They want to be a part of a group that seems to align with them” HUGE POINT. Social FOMO pretty much. Wanting to be a part of the “club” basically. You hit the nail on the head here

Yea people really just wanna check things off their list instead of being fully immersed in the experience. Its sad imo I can understand it for low stakes content like little Tik Tok videos but for detailed, high effort art. I don’t like it
