2 weeks ago, while stopping for gas in central Illinois off hwy 55, there were 2 tour buses full of 50+ people on a pitstop during their trip. I asked a woman where they were all headed. These are standard CBP flood/storm gates along the Arizona border wall. They open during monsoon season (mid-June to Sept 30) so flash floods and debris do not damage or topple the barrier. This practice has continued across multiple administrations. Crossing through them remains illegal. Current CBP data shows apprehensions at 30-year lows with zero releases for 15 months.

The border is actually mostly open. There isn’t any wall for it very 1200 miles of it. All you have to do is drive along the border from sandiego to loredo Texas . Gaps that are miles long.
