Happy 100th birthday to Mel Brooks - the funniest, kindest, smartest man in the history of the world. He’s been my hero ever since I snuck into Blazing Saddles at an inappropriately young age and had my mind blown. One of the great joys of my life has been becoming Mel’s friend. And here’s where that all started. I’ve never posted this clip before. It’s from 2010, when the American Cinematheque asked me to host a conversation with Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. We sorta met on stage. As things were winding down, Mel suddenly brought up Ed Wood. It was a completely surreal moment for me. What a mensch. We are all so lucky to have lived in the Mel Brooks century. Here’s to his next one thousand nine hundred years!

After the release of "The Producers" (1967), Mel Brooks got lots of letters from almost every Rabbi in New York condemning the movie [for its depiction of Hitler] & asking him to think twice before making a movie like it again. Brooks wrote back to every single Rabbi explaining, "You can't get on a soap box with Hitler. You've got to ridicule him. You got to bring him down with laughter. There is no way to get even." He wrote to make them understand the real intent behind the "Springtime for Hitler" scene. And he got a few letters back saying, "Maybe you're right, you know? It was OK." (Mel Brooks' interview with Conan O'Brien, 2013 & "Mel Brooks says his only regret as a comedian is the jokes he didn't tell", Terry Gross, 2022)

But there was a catch: after reading the script, Lucas asked Brooks to not sell merchandise. Brooks agreed and instead made this scene in the film roasting the fact that the Star Wars franchise had basically turned into a vehicle for Lucas to move an insane amount of toys, clothing and anything else that would pay a licensing fee. Worked out perfectly. Brooks didn’t get sued and we got an S-Tier parody film. May the Schwartz be with you.

When Mel Brooks phoned Cary Elwes to offer him the lead role in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993), Elwes hung up the phone as he thought Jim Carrey was pranking him by doing a Mel Brooks impression. Brooks phoned him again and said, “Don’t hang up! It’s really me! I want you for Robin Hood. We’ll cast the film together.” Elwes accepted the role immediately.
