Melbourne’s main focus at training was pretty clear: transition, defensive shape and finding overlap run behind the footy. Almost every drill came back to it, with Gawn and Viney especially vocal. Disco had his left knee heavily strapped and lasted only a few light agility drills. Lever didn’t train,...

The vet had been honest with the Hollands. Baxter didn't have much time left, and the kindest thing they could do now was make whatever he had left count. So on a warm Saturday in June , instead of a normal quiet day at home, they loaded the old Bernese into the back of the van and drove him two hours to the coast. Baxter had never seen the ocean. He was 13, and his whole life had been the backyard and the same worn spot on the living room rug. The kids wanted him to see something big before he went. He moved slow getting out of the van. His back legs weren't what they used to be, and the boys had to help him down onto the sand. For a second he just stood there at the top of the beach, nose up, taking in all that salt air and open water like he couldn't quite believe it. Then something in him shifted. He started down toward the surf on his own, stiff and determined, the way he used to trot to the door when the kids came home from school. When the first cold wave washed over his paws, his whole face lit up. He didn't run, he couldn't, but he waded in up to his chest and stood in the shallow water with the sun going down behind him, and the whole family just watched. Nobody said much. They didn't need to. They stayed until the light was almost gone, taking pictures, letting Baxter rest against their legs, giving him one perfect afternoon to hold onto. The vet was right about the time. Baxter left them a few weeks later, at home, surrounded by the people who loved him. But he saw the ocean first. And every one of them is glad they gave him that.

Back at my mom’s house I was sitting in the living room playing video games in my my underwear, I was around 12 years old and ever body was working until about 5pm so I still had a few hours before anybody was there. I usually kept the doors locked but the front door wasn’t locked, I just didn’t know that yet. I walked into the kitchen to grab a snack and a drink. I didn’t know that a family of three people just walked into the house. I came back holding a bag of chips and a drink and I saw two people standing there and another one just sitting on the couch like they were supposed to be there. My 12 year old brain couldn’t comprehend what was happening and I ran out of the house and to the neighbors house. I finally calmed down and told her what was happening, she grabbed her husband and went over there, I’m surprised they didn’t call the police first. The people in the house told the neighbor that they were friends of my dad and they were visiting from Pittsburgh. My neighbor called my dad at the restaurant and confirmed he knew them. He ended up leaving the restaurant and coming back early. His friends confused what days he was off from work and decided to come by and visit unannounced. He also told them it wasn’t a good idea to just walk in and that even though they were friends they should always knock on the door. I had never met these people before so I thought it was some kind of home invasion, it scared me. But from that point on I always made sure the doors were locked and that I was dressed decently just in case of unexpected visitors.

"When I adopted Ash, they warned me he might never really come out of his shell. He was a retired racing greyhound, just four years old, and he flinched at everything. A slammed door, footsteps behind him, even my hand if I reached too quickly. For weeks he spent most of his time standing quietly in the corner of my kitchen with his tail tucked, watching me like he was waiting for the moment I'd give up on him too. I live alone, and I'll admit there were nights when I wondered if I'd taken on more than I could handle. How do you convince a dog that the bad part of his life is finally over? I never tried to rush him. I'd sit on the floor, talk softly, and let him decide when he was ready. After about a month he stopped hiding in the corner and started sleeping on the dog bed. A few weeks later he'd lean against my leg while I made coffee, just for a second before walking away again. The moment I'll never forget happened at my brother's farm. I had Ash on a long lead in the middle of an empty hay field, letting him explore at his own pace. Then the lead dropped away. Ash froze for a long second. He simply stood there, staring across the open field as if he couldn't remember what freedom was supposed to feel like. Then something changed. He exploded into a run. Not away from me, but around me, tearing across the field in huge looping circles with his ears pinned back and that long skinny body stretched out exactly the way greyhounds were born to move. He looked like a dog rediscovering a part of himself that had been buried for years. I just stood there laughing while he kept circling me, faster and faster, kicking up dry hay with every stride. For the first time since I'd brought him home, he looked completely fearless. It felt like I was watching him become himself again. By the time he slowed down, his tongue was hanging out and his chest was rising and falling. He trotted straight back, leaned against my legs, and looked up at me with the calmest expression I'd ever seen on his face. I knew right then that he trusted me. Ash is still the shy dog at the park, and strangers can still make him nervous. But give him an open field, and for a few beautiful minutes, he remembers exactly who he was always meant to be. Have you ever watched a rescue dog finally remember what it feels like to be free?

A witness's memoir. The first days of a full-scale war. Massacre on the Zhytomyr highway, Kyiv region. Every Ukrainian killed by Russian soldiers is not a number. It is a person, people. Read this memoir. We were driving in the opposite lane. Almost as soon as we entered the stretch [of the Zhytomyr highway towards Kyiv - ed.] we heard shots. We stopped, the car was not moving. Maksym jumped out and started waving: "There are children here! Children!" It was all in front of me. He fell down. Ksenia started to rattle. Once, twice. Hordii said: "Why is mom rattling?" I turned around and took Hordii. I put him [in the driver's seat] and covered him [with myself]. I got a bullet (points to his right forearm - ed.). They were shooting for a long time. And then there was silence. I opened the door and there were Buryats with machine guns... I realized that they were Russians. I said immediately: "There are children here, don't shoot, please, there are children here." And they: "The child first". Hordii went out, but I couldn't go out... I got out and saw Maksym's legs. I wanted to approach him, but [the Russian] did not let me pass. He said: "That's it! That's it!" I started saying, "Ksenia is here! Mom is behind!" He looked: "Cover the child's eyes". I covered Hordii's eyes, I had a shawl. And he took us in that direction (to the area behind the gas station - ed.). There was a pit there. I asked him [the Russian who brought us]: "Are you serious now? Don't do that." And he said: "I'm sorry. My child is also six years old. I'm sorry." I thought they were going to shoot us. But a Russian officer appeared behind the pit and shouted: "Who opened fire? Who shot? Who brought her here?" I started to tell him: "We were on our way, we evacuated, they are shooting... we have children...", "You had no identification marks". I said: "We had white ones... and [the inscription] 'children' both in front and behind". Someone behind me said: "What are you going to do with them?" He looked me in the eye for so long, and then said: "Let them go." They took us out through the gas station and we left with Hordii. Another Buryat took Hordii in his arms and asked, "What's your name?" "'Hordii'. "I'm sorry, I know you won't forgive me, but I'm sorry." I think he was the one who shot and killed my parents. Winston had been returned to the shelter three times before the Abbotts came for him. He was an old shar-pei, all wrinkles and gray whiskers, about 11 years old. Every family that took him home brought him back within a month. He was too old, too slow, and too set in his ways for most people. One family even said he was depressing to have around. By the time the Abbotts saw his photo online, the shelter staff had almost given up hope that anyone would choose him. Ray and Carol Abbott were in their late 60s and had just lost their own dog after 14 years together. Friends told them to get a puppy. Something young. Something with plenty of years ahead. Instead, they drove an hour to meet the old shar-pei nobody wanted. Carol says she knew the moment she saw him sitting quietly in the back of his kennel. That first night, Winston couldn't settle. He kept getting up to make sure Ray and Carol were still there. He'd walk to the bedroom, look at them sleeping, lie back down, then twenty minutes later he'd do it all again, as if he was waiting for someone to tell him it was over. Finally, Carol patted the foot of the bed. "Come on up, Winston. You're home now." He stood there for a long moment, almost like he couldn't believe she was talking to him. Then he climbed up slowly, turned around twice, and eased himself down against Ray's legs with a long groan that sounded more like relief than exhaustion. For the first time in months, Winston slept through the entire night. The Abbotts say he isn't going anywhere this time. And after being returned three times, Winston finally seems to believe them. Have you ever seen a dog realize it was finally home?

my girlfriend cheated and denied dating me😭💔 she blamed it on the fact that i wanted a private relationship. I actually met this girl some months back and in the long run she asked me out , I decided to give the love a try after staying single for long and I regret ever meeting her. some days ago I met a friend of mine at a lounge and we got talking, things led to another and he mentioned my babe's name and i was like she's my gf. he was surprised and asked me for proof which ofc I showed him chats and all , he went on telling me how this girl had claimed I was just her friend. funny how this girl talked about this guy wanting them to talk and all but I overlooked it considering the fact that he was someone i knew ( although he didn't know I was dating her ), she had claimed to be single and started professing love for him. that night she told me she was going to sleep early cos it she was going to church the next day , but as at 12am my friend sent me a ss of their call. they were on call and he had my girlfriend's picture on his Whatsapp ( she gave him same picture of hers that I was using on wallpaper and dp having to find out I confronted her and ended everything, she went ahead to call him not knowing i was with him , she denied having anything to do with me and claimed she never loved me. for 7 minutes I was standing and listening to my girlfriend denying me , she never knew i was with the guy ... not until he told her someone wanted to speak with her and I could only say " are u being frr " and I ended the call. she blew up my phone with calls and messages, and I was wondering why she was calling me " what exactly do you want to explain ". she immediately started with the emotional card and gaslighting but I stood my ground that I was done with the relationship. idk why most girls do this frrr 💔💔
