Melee.c - super smash bros melee, decompiled and reverse engineered into 5000 lines or so of c All done with deepseek flash 0731, from my phone, while I'm hanging out with my newborn

Sol failed horrendously at this task, it ended up reward hacking around my requirements and wasting a bunch of tokens. Deepseek does make a lot of mistakes, but it actually listens to what I tell it

With the new tool I built (the tmux-auto tool I wrote in my blog about), I can keep projects like this on rails for a very long time We extended dolphin with our own tooling, pulled public slippi marth v marth replays, and created a harness to test the position side by side

I'm very close to being done with marth, now only some long tail of strange conflict scenarios (who wins an attack getting met at the same time). But after that, the rest of the characters _should_ just work

My own agent tool has been extended. It can give me videos of what happened, the divergences, these sorts of things. I am surprised how much my personal tooling was a gap for this run and gun development. I really can get so much absurd stuff done with only an open source model

unintentional artifact showing through at the end but oddly salient : )

Very interesting approach. We’re at the dawn of a golden age for retro gaming with all the hacking + decomp + modding breakthroughs.

This is what I did recently. Extracted all the assests from the iso, redid the animations, etc. Zig. Need to fix some stuff, but was fun.

can you open source this so I can turn it into a browser game and pretend to be from a jurisdiction that N*ntendo can't sue me from thanks

I don't understand what you mean by "decompiled", since Melee is more than 5000 lines of code. Also, you mentioned you're using Dolphin and SLPs, but are you able to replay SLPs faithfully and have gameplay generate SLPs that can be played back on Slippi Dolphin?

My dream has been to decompile my favorites and turn them into libraries to mix and match as I see fit. Sure why not a metroidvania mega man with a soccer mini game and point and click segments. With some card / pet battles along the way. Jump into my ship and Gradius meets super nova around to other game planets. 🪐 puzzle world here we come 🧩

Melee players won't touch it unless maybe you prove the behavior to be floating-point identical to the original, good luck with that. And even then that's not even considering retards with nocebo effect who will claim they can't play well on this because it's not the "real" melee

Did you check if your agent was actually just pulling the decomp it found online lol

Have you been using slippi replay files to do this? If not, you should look into it. The files are a recording of input, so you could use that to programmatically compare your decomp/RE to the emulated game

5000 lines? That's not Melee, that's just the frame data parser.

Can you do this for the superior project+ (brawl rom hack), and then make deterministic rollback work?

Now train AI on top slippi replays and make it so I can download top players and play against them until I become cracked at the game.

Melee has a vibrant online, grassroots, and open source-powered competitive scene. I think a good hard-but-achievable metric of success here should be seeing if you can get this version of melee to play via slippi with someone playing the normal ISO version online.

I've been trying to coax Sol into REing a fighting game so I can do a pufferlib model with artificial human input delay and imperfection. Looks like I need to just pay the China tax

I’ve been dreaming of custom 1v1’s where ai engineers compete regularly at training up an AI to play melee for a bit. Maybe make it to where we can speed up the game past human limits and allow the AI to fight eachother without a pesky human being able to keep up.

Why is it that in c it’s morally acceptable to put everything in a single file, some of the best programs I’ve read just ends in one .h or .c. but if you ask it to write in JavaScript it would produce like 50 files..

Where is the decompiled code? Can you show the matching compilation and make an ISO from it?

5000 lines for Melee? The full game is closer to 500,000. This is one corner of it, not the game.

Reversing copyrighted stuff, using AI to do work and you share it like you did a very good thing. The world has become mad.

Whoa. Not sure what to call this. It’s like a kind of compression or really the essence of the gameplay.
