SHE PLEADED GUILTY TO A CRIME THAT NEVER HAPPENED TO STAY OUT OF PRISON Let me tell you about Wendy Buffrey. She ran the Post Office branch in Up Hatherley, Cheltenham, from 1998 to 2008. She worked hard and grew the branch salary from 26,000 pounds to 65,000 pounds. Then a computer system called Horizon decided she owed money that never actually went missing. In 2010 she stood in Gloucester Crown Court and pleaded guilty to false accounting. Her own barrister warned her she had no chance against the Post Office and told her she was facing 5 years in prison if she fought the charge. She barely remembers the hearing. She remembers her son sobbing in the gallery above her. She sold her business. She sold her home. She repaid 26,256.63 pounds and 1,500 pounds in costs to a company that accused her using a computer that was wrong. She did all this while caring for a sick husband. The Criminal Cases Review Commission Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) did not refer her case until 2020. The Court of Appeal finally quashed her conviction in April 2021. That is 11 years carrying a criminal record for a crime that never happened. Her father and her son both died before her name was cleared. Post Office chairman Tim Parker eventually apologised for what he called historical failures. Historical failures is corporate language for we destroyed your life for over a decade and called it an accounting error. Wendy said she feels like one of the lucky ones because she is likely to get compensation. Hundreds of other postmasters are still waiting for theirs. Blame the postmaster. Protect the brand. Started watching Bluey with my son and get the hype. The “Sleepytime” episode is perfect (and too real). One of the few kid shows can actually enjoy with him…and a streaming juggernaut, per Bloomberg: ▫️Brand valued at $2B ▫️731 million viewing hours in 2023 (2nd most-streamed show after Suits) ▫️29% of all Disney+ TV views in Q4 of 2023 The show was created by Joe Brumm, a veteran TV animator (he worked on “Peppa Pig”). After moving from the UK back to Australia, he made a 1-minute “Bluey” sample in 2015 and showed it to Brisbane-based Ludo Studios. People enjoyed the teaser but didn’t know the intended audience. Brumm had initially considered an R-rated version of Peppa Pig but went with a show targeted at preschoolers (of note: the real Peppa Pig sold for $4B to Hasbro in 2019). With the kid's focus, Ludo convinced the country’s national broadcaster (Australian Broadcasting Corporation aka ABC) to give Brumm $13k for a 5-minute episode. Brumm delivered with the Heeler family, who are 4 cattle dogs living in Brisbane: title character Bluey (7-years old), her sister Bingo (5-years old) as well as Chilli (mom) and Bandit (dad). Material for the show was borrowed from Brumm’s own life as a father of two girls. ABC liked the episode and greenlit $5m+ for a first season. Unable to foot the whole bill, ABC partnered with BBC Studios (the business segment of the UK’s national broadcaster). BBC got the global distribution, licensing and merchandising rights for Bluey (outside of Australia). In other words, ABC is barely profiting from one of the country’s largest cultural exports since Mad Max, AC/DC, Kyle Minogue or Crocodile Dundee. Brumm has written every episode by himself and it was a deliberate choice. He told The Hollywood Reporter that established kids TV writing is too “formulaic”. He integrated adult themes into the show because he wanted “a good co-viewing show where the parents could genuinely watch it with the kids” and there weren’t many options for the “the preschool stage”. Important topics treated with care include infertility, mental health and alcohol. “Whale Watching” is my favourite episode and is about parenting while hungover — see a spot-on excerpt at the (1:59) mark in the clip below. There have been 150 episodes (~7 minutes each) over 3 seasons. Some are worried Brumm’s run is coming to an end: ▫️His daughters have gotten older (less material) ▫️ The voice actors — including some Brisbane-based children — are also getting older (and voices changing) ▫️Also, the season 3 finale on April 14 is suspiciously long (at 28 minutes) However it shakes out, Brumm has created a masterpiece…and given a few go-to quotes in my house including “I slipped on ma’ beans!”, “a tactical wee” and “pass the sauce, dude!”

Started watching Bluey with my son and get the hype. The “Sleepytime” episode is perfect (and too real). One of the few kid shows can actually enjoy with him…and a streaming juggernaut, per Bloomberg: ▫️Brand valued at $2B ▫️731 million viewing hours in 2023 (2nd most-streamed show after Suits) ▫️29% of all Disney+ TV views in Q4 of 2023 The show was created by Joe Brumm, a veteran TV animator (he worked on “Peppa Pig”). After moving from the UK back to Australia, he made a 1-minute “Bluey” sample in 2015 and showed it to Brisbane-based Ludo Studios. People enjoyed the teaser but didn’t know the intended audience. Brumm had initially considered an R-rated version of Peppa Pig but went with a show targeted at preschoolers (of note: the real Peppa Pig sold for $4B to Hasbro in 2019). With the kid's focus, Ludo convinced the country’s national broadcaster (Australian Broadcasting Corporation aka ABC) to give Brumm $13k for a 5-minute episode. Brumm delivered with the Heeler family, who are 4 cattle dogs living in Brisbane: title character Bluey (7-years old), her sister Bingo (5-years old) as well as Chilli (mom) and Bandit (dad). Material for the show was borrowed from Brumm’s own life as a father of two girls. ABC liked the episode and greenlit $5m+ for a first season. Unable to foot the whole bill, ABC partnered with BBC Studios (the business segment of the UK’s national broadcaster). BBC got the global distribution, licensing and merchandising rights for Bluey (outside of Australia). In other words, ABC is barely profiting from one of the country’s largest cultural exports since Mad Max, AC/DC, Kyle Minogue or Crocodile Dundee. Brumm has written every episode by himself and it was a deliberate choice. He told The Hollywood Reporter that established kids TV writing is too “formulaic”. He integrated adult themes into the show because he wanted “a good co-viewing show where the parents could genuinely watch it with the kids” and there weren’t many options for the “the preschool stage”. Important topics treated with care include infertility, mental health and alcohol. “Whale Watching” is my favourite episode and is about parenting while hungover — see a spot-on excerpt at the (1:59) mark in the clip below. There have been 150 episodes (~7 minutes each) over 3 seasons. Some are worried Brumm’s run is coming to an end: ▫️His daughters have gotten older (less material) ▫️ The voice actors — including some Brisbane-based children — are also getting older (and voices changing) ▫️Also, the season 3 finale on April 14 is suspiciously long (at 28 minutes) However it shakes out, Brumm has created a masterpiece…and given a few go-to quotes in my house including “I slipped on ma’ beans!”, “a tactical wee” and “pass the sauce, dude!”

She spent the next two decades fighting for compensation while the people who built and defended a broken system kept their salaries, their bonuses and their pensions. In 2025, aged 92, Betty finally settled her claim. In 2026 she received an OBE from King Charles at Windsor Castle. She used the moment to tell him that money does not equal justice, and asked him to pass that on to the Prime Minister. She still had not received a single penny of her settlement by the time she collected the medal. That is the British state's idea of closure. The site is located on a small plateau that slopes eastward toward a stream valley. South of the burial ground, beyond a narrow rise, lies a broad hollow containing the medieval village of Gatyn-Kale and the steep canyon of the Verdy-Akhk. The reconstructed individuals, a young warrior and likely his wife, were buried in a paired burial no. 7. The young man stood approximately 179 cm tall, while the young woman was about 160 cm in height. The warrior had suffered a fatal blow to his head. Burial 7 contained more than sixty objects, including ceramic vessels, bronze items such as ornaments, amulets and weapons, beads, arrowheads, and ornaments made from Caspian Sea shells (Krupnov, E. I., 1961). The population of Gatyn-Kale engaged in pastoralism and agriculture. The society was patriarchal: research has shown that paired burials (men and women) appear with the emergence of patriarchy. At the Gatyn-Kale site several such graves have been discovered - in these cases the woman was sacrificed so that she could accompany her husband in the afterlife. (Markovin, V. I., 1969) The individuals whose DNA was sampled at Gatyn-Kale carried the Y-DNA haplogroup J1-Z1842 and autosomally belonged to the Kura-Araxes cluster (Ghalichi, 2024). Anthropologically, the Gatyn-Kale skulls are relatively gracile for the Bronze Age. They are characterized by small cranial dimensions, a medium cranial index, a moderately high cranial vault, a medium-height face, narrow cheekbones, and low orbits. Culturally and anthropologically, the burial ground appears to represent a contact zone between the tribes of North Caucasus and Dagestan. Comparisons with cranial series from Dagestan, Georgia, the South Caucasus, and the Trans-Volga region show that the Gatyn-Kale skulls resemble the Volga series in cranial indices, while in their gracile morphology they correspond more closely to the southern (Indo-Mediterranean) type. These features may represent either a gracilized Proto-Europoid type, a southern variant, or the result of interaction between northern and southern anthropological types. However, the absence of medium cheekbone breadth (which would have resulted from admixture between a wide-faced northern population and a narrow-faced southern population) argues against significant admixture, suggesting instead a local southern variant or influence from populations of the Northcaucasian cultural sphere (“Antiquities of Dagestan”, Makhachkala, 1974).

I think it's fair to say that Nigel Farage's return to the media round yesterday morning was an unmitigated catastrophe. When he began his defence to Sally Nugent on the BBC, he repeated his mantra “no one cares” to her three times. He could not have been further from the truth. With the exception of Ed Balls on ITV, the UK's interviewers finally found their backbones and took him to task over the five million pound bung/gift/donation. Immediately taking the über-defensive stance, he made so many different claims, that even Julia Hartley-Brewer and Nick Ferrari got in on the anti-Farage action. I assume there is a Grimm fairy tale that highlights the plight of a little boy that changes his story so many times that he can't remember his own truth. Probably in that tale, he'll be eaten by a witch living in a giant flying bowl of some sort — and no, this is not an allegorical allusion to Hartley-Brewer, before you @ me! Farage is that little boy. Talking to Sally Nugent, he told her that the money was an unconditional gift and it was none of her business what he spent it on, before saying he'd not spent it. Going on, he told us that he needed it for a lifetime of security while on Nick Ferrari's show, he got so muddled up that he said it was definitely not used for a house purchase but ... maybe, and even if it were, he'd not tell anyone. Oh, and he said he might have put it on the horses or bought some Ferraris. The root of his story began when he told the world that it was an unconditional gift, but within days the official line had changed to a donation to cover a 'lifetime of security'. Only for it to morph again the following week into a gift for his work achieving Brexit. Yesterday he trotted out all of these lines and more so you can see where the conspiracy stems from and why it won't be dropped any time soon.
