When I conduct therapy sessions for men—husbands and fathers who don’t know the proper way to talk to their kids—or when I see a friend who is clearly sad, but the only thing people do is tease or joke with him… for many men, an emotional check-in is just teasing. It’s like, if you’re still okay with the teasing, that means you’re still okay. But I saw that both of you support each other on a deeper level than that. If one of you feels lonely, I believe you’re able to tell each other directly. Being a man should include the ability to do this. It should go beyond just teasing or silently doing activities together.
