Because of her, the name Bukky became synonymous with a kind of graceful, magnetic confidence back then. People admired her. You’d see all sorts of flashy cars pulling into their compound almost every day. She travelled a lot too—one of the youngest ladies around to drive a Mercedes at the time. Money, movement, soft life… she lived it like it was nothing. Even we, the little boys in the area, admired her from afar. But one question always bothered me: “Why doesn’t Aunty Bukky just settle down with one of those men?” One day, my childhood friend Bobo (may his soul rest in peace) made a comment I never forgot. In his usual street wisdom, he said something like: “No matter how you repaint or redesign a public place, people won’t claim ownership of what everyone freely had access to.” Fast-forward to 2024. I visited the old neighbourhood, and to my surprise, I saw Aunty Bukky. My heart almost stopped. She had changed—a mother of three now, sitting at the bus stop selling small items with some area boys around. She didn’t even recognize me. I gently asked one of the guys around what happened… who she eventually married… who the father of her children was. The answers shocked me. No one knew. Not even she could clearly say who fathered which child. Life had taken a tough, complicated turn. The same street reputation that looked like glamour when we were kids did not age well for her.
