This is the most fertile phase of the cycle, as the egg can be fertilized by sperm. Ovulation usually occurs around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, but it can vary depending on the cycle length and individual factors. The ovulation phase lasts for about 24 hours. - The luteal phase is when the ruptured follicle transforms into a structure called the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone. Progesterone maintains the endometrium and prepares it for implantation of a fertilized egg. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates and the levels of estrogen and progesterone drop, leading to the next menstrual phase. This phase lasts for about 14 days, and is relatively constant in length.
