This is both incredible and terrifying. We are rapidly approaching a reality where even our internal thoughts and mental images are no longer private. The bridge between neuroscience and digital surveillance is narrowing faster than we can regulate it. If we can reconstruct imagination today, what happens to the "freedom of thought" tomorrow? This is a massive leap for BCI technology. What are the long-term ethical boundaries for this kind of tech? @elonmusk 🧠

Sounds like another pseudo-breakthrough, I highly doubt it's true.

Something about the idea that what we "see" in our dreams is being actually, objectively "seen" in our brain, and not just vaguely interpreted or imagined in hindsight is fascinating. The notion that our brains are both producing and encountering those things, simultaneously, without being aware that it is doing both of those things, is wild.

Just to break down how crazy this is! The MRI reads blood flow and oxygen levels in the brain (not even brain waves) and the patterns in this data is similar enough for similar shapes, items and colours that an AI is able to be trained on said data and used to reconstruct the image. Just imagine what EEG could do! if we directly read the brain waves

Just a wild guess, but the interference we see in some images (the rapid succession of images) is the brain thinking and scanning memory for similar images or connected thoughts (in an abstract way).

I wonder how it will be for people with photographic memory
