8 years ago today, Arsenal became the first team in history to beat the Premier League Champions in the FA Cup final, beating Chelsea 2-1 in what was at the time, Arsène Wenger’s worst season. Going into the game Laurent Koscielny was suspended, Shkodran Mustafi & Gabriel were injured, while captain Per Mertesacker had only played 37 minutes all season after missing A WHOLE YEAR through injury. Mertesacker ended up starting his first game of the season in the final & put in the best performance of his entire Arsenal career.

In 2011, a mix up in the 89th minute between Laurent Koscielmy & Wojciech Szczęsny led to Arsenal famously losing the League Cup Final to Birmingham City. However in 2012, Koscielny scored the winning goal against West Brom on the final day of the Premier League season to secure Champions League football. As a result, Arsenal were able to sign Santi Cazorla & Olivier Giroud. Just a year later, in 2013, Koscielny scored the winning goal on the final day of the season again to secure Champions League football; this time against Newcastle. This allowed Arssnal to sign Mesut Özil from Real Madrid. In 2014, Koscielmy scored a 71st minute equaliser against Hull City in the FA Cup final after going 2-0 down. This helped Arsenal win their first trophy in 9 years. Redemption

16 years ago today, Arsenal striker Robin van Persie tore his ankle ligaments in a friendly vs Italy, which ruled him out for 5 months damaging Arsenal’s title hopes. Arsène Wenger would then sue the Dutch FA for misdiagnosing the injury & not sending him back to Arsenal straight away. Van Persie was named Arsenal Player of the Year in the previous season, scoring the most goals for the club & providing the most assists in the entire Premier League. Arsenal were top of the league in March but collapsed in the final two months.
