In Sophie’s Choice (1982), Meryl Streep had to perform one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever filmed where Sophie is forced by the Nazis to make an unthinkable decision about her children. The moment was so devastating that Streep said she could only perform it once. She explained that the pain and emotion were too real to go through again, so the take we see in the film is the only one she ever gave.

Tender Mercies won Robert Duvall his only #Oscar. This movie means so much to me because of Duvall’s performance. He’s brilliant. Duvall cuts open his heart & lays it on the table for the audience to see. He could not be better in this film. Duvall cared. He will be missed. RIP.

Meryl Streep is 77 today & it’s a great reminder that Streep, alongside Robert De Niro, is breathtaking in The Deer Hunter, which earned Streep an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The Deer Hunter is as good as Cinema gets & marked the end of the New Hollywood era. Streep was there for all of it. She’s still here & I’m thankful. 🎂

Rose Byrne is so worthy of the Oscar for Best Actress. I’m still thinking about her role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. She cuts open her heart & soul and throws it on the screen for audiences to absorb. I had no idea she could pull this sort of performance off. A 2025 standout.

This is available on demand & it features Gene Hackman & Frances McDormand in Oscar-nominated performances, as well as a great performance from Willem Dafoe. Hell, this film earned a boat-load of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It’s excellent and worth your time.
