So the 400 broken down buses pick the usable parts and substitute into the not so broken buses. I am confident at least half of these can be fixed locally by local mechanics using salvaged parts from these same buses.

Your maintenance culture in this country is mind boggling. This has been the refrain. We can't manage and maintain our fleet and it cuts across. STC Ayalolo buses and most government transport systems are poorly maintained. Even our presidential aircraft suffered corrosion.

Hon. Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Minister for Transport, said: “This week, we engaged with the GPRTU and other transport unions and visited key congested areas. More buses are being deployed, fares will be reduced, and 300 Metro Mass buses will soon join the system, with 100 arriving on 15 February and another 100 by April. Private investors are also supporting these efforts. We are committed to improving transport in Accra. Already, 15 buses have been repaired, and over 135 are operational. Very soon, the public will see the results of our hard work.”

Buses operating in the Brits area of the North West Province have allegedly been subjected to continuous intimidation and interference by SANTACO-affiliated taxi operators. On Sunday afternoon, in a drive at the Gourkanya Bus Terminus in Malda, names, logos and stickers mimicking those of government buses were removed from several private buses. Many private buses were operating with colour schemes (blue and white) and names resembling those of the state transport corporation. The use of such colours and names was causing confusion among passengers, particularly women. Following an order from the state government, free travel for women on government buses was introduced on 1 June. However, due to the visual similarity between government and private buses, many female passengers were inadvertently boarding private buses and subsequently getting hassled. Some private buses were displaying names like NBTS, MBTSG, and MMT to mimic the name of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC). Additionally, the vehicles were painted blue and white, just like government buses. On Sunday afternoon, Anupam Chakraborty, the regional transport officer (RTO) of the district, arrived at the Gourkanya Bus Terminus with transport department staff. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, under whose leadership I serve, I had the privilege of joining the management of Metro Mass Transit in Egypt for the final inspection of three hundred (300) ISUZU buses slated for delivery to Ghana. This important undertaking reflects the Minister’s clear vision and policy direction to strengthen Ghana’s public transport system through strategic investment in modern, reliable, and efficient mass transit. The arrival of these buses will significantly expand fleet capacity, improve service coverage, reduce long waiting times, and enhance safety and comfort for commuters. In practical terms, this intervention will ease the daily burden on workers, students, and traders, help decongest our roads, lower overall transport costs, and contribute to a more orderly and environmentally responsible urban transport system. OAU transport system was near perfect, adequate buses and bikes, we rarely experienced queues until the First Lady came and decided she didn’t like the ease of transportation and introduced “change” by donating CNG buses. The school management in turn banned all motorcycles and commercial buses on campus and subjected over 30,000 students to just about 50 buses and a few tricycles. OAU has one of the largest land masses of any Nigerian university, yet students are now stranded daily. This is a Monday morning where students are supposed to rush for class, but they are stuck at the campus gate because of the inefficiency of the CNG buses. Students are struggling to go to class in the morning and in the evenings to even get back to their hostels. Students staying off campus now spend almost double to get to campus, all alternative transport means have been removed The management have cars to bypass all of this, but majority of students do not. Yet they released statements talking about how the buses will “ease transportation” and even implied students appreciate the system. Meanwhile, students are trekking, missing classes, and spending hours in queues. Let it be clear that students do not appreciate this system. It has made our lives harder, not better. What used to be a smooth system has now become a daily struggle. There are many pressing issues in this school, but they chose to dismantle a working transport system and replace it with hardship. This is the current situation at St Mary’s Bridge in Chitungwiza, a dormitory town next to Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare. It is quite disheartening because Zimbabwe once had a thriving public transport system in all cities and towns, with buses comparable to those in many modern countries, but ZANUPF destroyed it. Chitungwiza, for instance, had a bus company called ZimElectro Motors (ZEM), which played a crucial role in providing affordable public transport for residents commuting between Chitungwiza and Harare during its operation. ZEM was owned by the Chitungwiza Town Council and was a municipally-run bus company established to provide affordable and reliable transport for residents of the town. However, when ZANUPF came into power, the company was driven into the ground. Money was looted, and unqualified managers were appointed. The rest, as they say, is history. Zimbabweans must realise that nobody is coming to save them from this abusive regime.
