We don’t always associate mobility with speed in sports performance, but early first round leader Aldrich Potgieter is a good example of how the two can be connected in the golf swing. The bigger the turn a player can make, the longer their “acceleration ramp,” giving them more time to apply force to the club before impact. One of the key physical capabilities we measure in rotational athletes is thoracic spine mobility, which we assess through our Seated Trunk Rotation Test. When he came to TPI, Aldrich tested as well as anyone on the PGA TOUR, demonstrating 65° of rotation to the right and 70° to the left. Our movement screen isn’t predictive of golf skill, but it does help us evaluate the key movement capabilities that underpin the golf swing. While it’s certainly not the only physical quality responsible for his prodigious speed, Aldrich’s exceptional range of motion allows him to make more than a 100° shoulder turn in his backswing, extending that ramp and giving him more time to accelerate the club.

Real Club Valderrama hosted its first event on the LIV Golf League in 2023 and has been a staple on the schedule since. The GM, Javier Reviriego, says they are very happy with their partnership and they will be looking to renew their contract when it’s up next season. Speaking to Flushing It Golf, Javier said: “We're very happy. I mean, for us, the event has been great, giving us a lot of visibility. “The best thing is to have these great players here. I mean, these players, we would have never dreamed of having them here in a DP World Tour event. That's a fact. “And we couldn't dream of bringing a PGA Tour event to Spain because I don't think that was ever going to happen either. So, we wanted this quality of players, and there was no choice, really.” LIV Golf Andalucía is just 5 weeks away and the build out is currently going up all over the course, with a huge hospitality area on the bank behind the 17th green striking an imposing presence. Advertising boards promoting the event greet arrivals at Gibraltar Airport and they are in the process of thickening the rough to make the course as challenging as ever. Javier says he has spoken to league executives who assure him it’s business as usual and Valderrama are even considering some renovations to the golf course to help improve the venue for future years. I’ve had the pleasure of assisting Michael S. Kim with his training for the last 18 months or so. Mike has gotten much stronger and gained ~10lbs in this time frame. We’ve had 3 main areas of focus: 1️⃣ Increase size and strength of the fast twitch muscle fibers with pretty traditionial strength training methods 🏋️. Compound lifts, heavy 5 rep sets. 2️⃣ Practice swinging faster with a radar for feedback, both with TheStack and hitting balls with driver. How much of each adjusts based on the time of season 🏌️‍♂️. 3️⃣ Ensure nutrition supports the goal of muscle growth and recovery from golf & training. It is very common for tour players to underfuel and lose weight as the season goes on. They have a very high level of energy expenditure from all of the practice, play, and training, so need a lot of food 🍱. Mike is now much more physically capable of higher speeds than previous years. I expect and hope to see a nice little bump in speed as the season goes on. At this level, a 3-4mph gain in club head speed is enormous, and that is what we are targeting! This training speed of 121mph below will hopefully be 123-125mph in the coming weeks, allowing comfortable 118mph or so on the course in tournament play.

I love this tragic, subtle parallel in the Godfather Trilogy. Both Vito and Michael Corleone die of old age in a garden setting, retired dons relaxing in the sun with oranges nearby. The parallel is deliberate, but the contrast reveals everything. I’m halfway through all the HC interviews from American Conference media days. Here are my quick notes: - Memphis HC Charles Huff makes national headlines every time he takes the podium - UTSA HC Jeff Traylor seems more calm overhaul. I think his comments about OC Rick Bowie are cool because he’s “getting back” to running the kind of offense that suits his philosophy. - USF HC Brian Hartline has an intensity about him that will be good for a successful team. If they’re not successful though, his shtick could go in the other direction. - Rice HC Scott Abell being so committed to his formula is just cool to see. If they’re get Jacurri Brown rolling, they could be a legit threat and just an annoying team to play. - ECU HC Blake Harrell was cool to hear his perspective on the new coordinators and how he’s excited to shake things up. They have a lot of position battles to sort through in camp. - Tulsa HC Tre Lamb impressed/surprised me the most. Really good energy, coming into his own as a HC and has a sneaky confidence his team will make legit noise this year.
