Michael Caine & Christopher Nolan collaborated on 8 films. Had Caine never worked with Nolan, his legacy as an all-time great was already set. But between his 70s & his 90s, a time when most actors retire, Caine somehow added this Nolan Chapter to an already storied career.

It’s officially #ChristopherNolanWeek but Michael Caine officially isn’t part of this week’s new Nolan release & that makes me sad. Caine & Nolan combined for 8 films together, the latest, and presumably the last, being Tenet back in 2020. Michael Caine is simply one of the most important actors of my life. The fact he has an additional chapter near the end of his career with Nolan is so legendary. I cherish this duo.

Inception's ending was left ambiguous by Christopher Nolan, but Michael Caine let it slip that Nolan told him anytime he appears, its reality, meaning Cobb finally reunites with his kids.

The Dark Knight is Christopher Nolan’s best film & it might be his best script too. This scene between Michael Caine & Christian Bale has always stayed with me because of the stoicism Alfred imparts on Bruce & the way in which he turns the tables around on Bruce. Moments between Bale & Caine throughout this franchise are unforgettable. I’m so ready for new Nolan.

Had Josh Brolin never made a film again after 2024, he’d already go down as one of the most reliable actors of his generation. But then came 2025, where he starred in Weapons, The Running Man & today’s new #KnivesOut film. In ‘25, Brolin somehow elevated an already storied career

When Christopher Nolan initially approached Sir Michael Caine to play Alfred Pennyworth in Batman Begins (2005), Caine was actually highly skeptical. He joked to Nolan that he was far too old to play Batman and asked, “Do you want me to play the butler? What would my dialogues be? ‘Would you like another beverage or more custard?’” To avoid playing a cliché, passive servant, Caine invented an incredibly thorough and specific military backstory for Alfred: Caine decided that Alfred was not a traditionally trained butler who went to service school. Instead, he imagined him as a former Special Air Service (SAS) soldier who had been severely wounded in battle and could no longer fight on the front lines. Because this tough sergeant didn't want to return to civilian life, he took over managing the Sergeants' Mess. Caine explained, “So what that is is you have this very tough ex-S.A.S. guy who knows all about drinks and service and getting sandwiches and coffee, because he had to learn it for the sergeants mess.” In Caine’s backstory, Thomas Wayne visited the SAS headquarters in Herefordshire to see an officer friend. While in the mess, he met this fiercely disciplined, highly capable sergeant and hired him right there to be his personal keeper and protector. When Caine pitched this entire character outline to Christopher Nolan on set, the director absolutely loved it. Nolan looked at him and said, “Oh, I should have written it.” This exact backstory Michael Caine invented was so popular and rich that DC Comics later leaned heavily into Alfred's active military history, and it eventually became the primary foundation for the standalone prequel TV series Pennyworth on Epix.

Michael Caine explained that he had no difficulty crying in that scene of The Dark Knight Rises. He was so deeply invested in his role that he let himself be overwhelmed by emotion. He even said it was one of the hardest scenes of his entire career, because he was playing a man who was “abandoning his son.” Christopher Nolan revealed that he only needed a single take to capture Caine’s performance, as it was so powerful and authentic.

Christopher Nolan Explains Why He Doesn’t Use CGI and Shoots on IMAX Robert Downey Jr.: Why Christopher Nolan doesn’t use CGI. Christopher Nolan: I find CGI, however versatile it is, but it always tends to feel a little safe to me. Christopher Nolan: I think if you want something to have a bit of bite, you’ve got the imagery to a better threat, even if it’s a miniature, even if it’s something very fake, but something real on camera. Christopher Nolan: I think it gives you a better result. Robert Downey Jr.: Why does Christopher Nolan shoot on film? Christopher Nolan: I shoot on film because it’s the highest quality imaging format ever devised, particularly IMAX film, large-format film. Christopher Nolan: Film shows you the world kind of the way your eye sees it. Robert Downey Jr.: Where does Christopher Nolan get his ideas? Christopher Nolan: All over the place. Different on every film. Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer, I’d been interested in a long time, didn’t know that much about the specifics of his story, then came to the book American Prometheus, and that absolutely got me hooked. Christopher Nolan: So, in the case of Oppenheimer, the idea… I trace it right back to, like, as a kid in the eighties, and we all thought we were gonna die in nuclear Armageddon. Robert Downey Jr.: Absolutely. Me too.

Insomnia is the only film Christopher Nolan & Al Pacino united on & I think it’s perhaps the most underrated movie of Nolan’s filmography. Yes- this is a slow burn, I get that. But it’s an intimate performance from Pacino with nuanced direction from Nolan. This film is good. 🎂

Christian Bale desperately needs Christopher Nolan right now. And Nolan, to be quite frank, doesn’t need anyone. I say this because Bale is at a crossroads. He hasn’t starred in a good film in years. And I say that as a card-carrying member of the Christian Bale Fan Club. I love this man. I love his commitment. I love his persona. But films like Amsterdam, Thor: Love and Thunder, and this year’s The Bride! are all atrocious films. All of them. It’s the precise reason Bale needs to reunite with Nolan. Nolan is responsible for some of Bale’s best work.

At least 3x every year I get an uncontrollable urge, to watch the Generational Masterpiece that is Interstellar. Somehow, someway this scene still hits just as hard every single time. Matthew McConaughey & Christopher Nolan are truly elite.

Christian Bale who normally weighed around 80kg, had to reduce his weight to 54kg for his role in "The Machinist" (2004). He had to increase his weight to play Batman in "Batman Begins" (2005). To increase his weight, He was lifting really heavy weights and just stuffing so much into his mouth. His body was under so much pressure that he could feel it. To fill out his Batman suit, Bale stuffed himself with food and when he was not eating, he was in the gym. His doctor said to him, 'You are going nuts. You have to slow down'." But when he arrived on the set of 'Batman Begins', he was 100kg, well overweight. According to Bale, Nolan had no idea who Bale was when he arrived to the set with his long hair. "When Nolan got close he was like 'Holy f... You look like Grizzly Adams. What's going on?'" Nolan then asked him to get a little leaner. Michael Caine was stunned too, especially after seeing him as a young man in "The Machinist" & "American Psycho". He felt Bale looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Some of the English members in the crew joked, "'Hey Chris, what film are we making here? Fatman?'." ("Bale turns to fatman", Sydney Morning Herald, 2005) P.S: On this day, 21 years ago, Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" (2005) premiered in Tokyo, Japan.

Christopher Nolan reveals the first time an actor said no to him was David Bowie, and he had to personally beg him to change his mind. Jimmy Fallon: Have you ever gotten a “no”? Christopher Nolan: Have I ever gotten a “no”? Yeah, I have. Jimmy Fallon: Besides me when I said I didn’t want to do Batman. Christopher Nolan: The only “no” I’ll admit to is David Bowie for The Prestige. He was my great idol, and I thought he’d be perfect to play Nikola Tesla. Christopher Nolan: We sent him the script and everything, and he said no. It was the first time I ever went back and said, “Can I just go and meet him? Can I try and convince him in the room?” Christopher Nolan: They agreed, so I quickly wrote him a better speech for his first appearance, showed up with a new script, and basically begged. I managed to turn that “no” into a “yes.” Jimmy Fallon: Yes! But you did get a “no” from the coolest kid in school.

Matt Damon is back in theaters in a matter of days- this time leading a Christopher Nolan film- and it’s grounds for revisiting Damon’s entire career. The Rainmaker is one of a handful of elite ‘90s films Damon gave us & it’s an awesome collaboration between Damon & Francis Ford Coppola. I love legal thrillers & this is as good as they come.
