Whilst I'm a huge fan of Michael Knowles, and I do agree with the essence of what he is saying, I can't agree. In an ideal world, yes, university degrees would be a legitimate marker of a person who has spent a considerable amount of time pursuing academic excellence and truth amongst other likeminded and intelligent people. Unfortunately, this is not what the universities offer right now. I don't want to paint with a brush so broad as to include every university under the sun. The work of @JeremyTate41 is remarkable and a real glimmer of hope. But the sad reality is that if you're interested in pursuing the humanities, I truly believe that there is no worse place to do so than a typical, even elite, Western university. The works of the great masters are held up as texts embodying patriarchal oppression or white supremacy and heads are being filled with nonsense, instead. But this is not news to anyone. I see no reason why a pair of headphones, access to Youtube/Audible, and a bookcase, either digitial or vitual, stocked with the free/cheap works that constitute most of worthwhile humanities texts consumed whilst working an entry-level job/apprenticeship (if possible) — and that's to say nothing of serious devoted study outside of this passive consumption — would produce someone less informed of the Western philosophical canon than any bozo at any given liberal arts course. Frankly, I'd bet every penny in my bank account that an average IQ construction worker who had one AirPod playing Frederick Coplestone in his ear for a couple of days whilst lugging sacks of cement across a construction site could speak far more lucidly about the canon than many people at purportedly prestigious universities. And if you are to subject yourself to the modern university system, to do so without choosing a vocational degree and being single-mindedly focused on getting a job in that field at the end of your course is just silly. University fees and student loans are such insidious scams. If you're going to be putting that albatross around your neck, please plan your finances diligently and do it in something like engineering, medicine, law, STEM etc. Leave the humanities to die. They shall rise from the ashes, without a doubt. It's happened plenty of times before. But right now they're still burning. Don't go up in flames with them. Sincerely, a History and Philosophy grad.

But you can immerse yourself in the humanities, philosophy and history by going to the library, and it won't cost you half a million dollars. And as a bonus, you won't come out as a woke professional protester.

@michaeljknowles Weird way to justify your Italian literature degree... But I also have an English literature degree so I guess it's fair.

@michaeljknowles Yeah… It’s not to acquire a piece of paper. It’s to uncover truth and study until your brain melts.
