The 1965 Voting Rights Act was landmark legislation to stop states from diluting the vote of minorities - most notably Black voters in the South who had been systematically disenfranchised. Last month, the US Supreme Court gutted it. Today, Michigan became the first state in the country since that ruling to hold a legislative hearing on state level legislation to enshrine those rights. I was proud to cosponsor these bills and vote them out of committee.

The Second Amendment is quintessential to the American story. There isn’t a United States without arms, there isn’t an end to the Civil War without arms. There isn’t any meaningful resistance to the horrors of the Jim Crow era without Southern Blacks being armed against tyrannical local and state governments, despite anti-2A laws to disarm them. The irony is some of those same laws have been cited today by states such as Hawaii and North Carolina to justify firearm restrictions. Some of the most consequential moments in American history have involved firearms in some capacity. It’s a rich part of our history that shouldn’t be infringed. Despite the statistical fact that law-abiding gun owners rarely ever commit firearms related offenses, despite the fact that Americans of all backgrounds enjoy the freedoms guaranteed by the Second Amendment for a multitude of purposes, anti-Second Amendment political leaders like the governor in my state of Virginia continue restricting the rights of Virginians under the guise of public safety. If the governor and her Democratic majority truly want to address public safety, they should focus on improving the education in underserved areas, focus on expanding economic opportunities that put men to work, providing a mentorship pipeline for young men, and incentivizing stronger family units. All of those efforts would produce far better outcomes in reducing crime than violating the rights of law-abiding gun owners. So we’ll continue to enjoy this right on the range, at shooting competitions, while hunting as we challenge the state in court for its obvious violation of the second amendment. The last thing Texas, or the nation needs are Red Flag Laws. As a military veteran and proud gun owner, I know that burdening law-abiding citizens goes against the very spirit of the Second Amendment. That’s exactly why John Cornyn is in trouble, Texans don’t want gun grabs disguised as “safety.” And every time weak Republicans make concessions with our fundamental rights, what’s the first thing the Left says? “We have to do more.” They will never be satisfied until the 2nd Amendment is erased from history. NOT on my watch.

Former Ohio State wide receiver coach Zach Smith on his YouTube show, Menace 2 Sports, is rumored to have been the one who began allegations that Ryan Day’s brother investigated Michigan. However, Zach Smith said it as a joke to “troll” Michigan fans. It turns out that prominent Michigan fans and media took the bait. Zach first discussed this on October 27th, 2023, in this episode: Thirty-four hours later, Sam Webb wrote on the 247 “The Michigan Insider” message board post where he wanted to suggest the identity of “the complaining team” to be a PI firm from New Hampshire (Ryan Day’s home state). Webb deduces that a Christopher Day from LinkedIn, who runs a PI firm in New Hampshire, is worthy of further investigation. Barstool owner and Michigan graduate Dave Portnoy picked up the name. He ran with it in a tweet on November 1st, insinuating that Paul Finebaum wants to convict Michigan without knowing that “leaked information from Ryan Days brother.” Today, Chris Balas for reported that Michigan media has speculations about Ryan Day hiring both of his brothers to investigate Michigan and illegally giving information about Connor Stalions to the Washington Post. Not only that, but Jeremy Birmingham posted a screenshot of Chris Balas on the On3 message board answering a fan question, “Could day be suspended by the sportsmanship rule?” Balas answered by saying, “We’ve contacted the Big Ten. Kentucky doesn’t need to codify federal gun control. Yesterday in Judiciary Committee, legislators heard a bill proposal that would change Kentucky law to adopt a federal firearm restriction. I’m vehemently opposed to gun control at the federal level—why on earth would we want to codify it into a state law here in the Commonwealth?! As a stalwart defender of our Second Amendment Rights, it is my hope that federal firearm restrictions will be repealed by Congress, or at least overturned like the bump stock ban. The last thing we need is more gun control at the state level. Those of us working to repeal existing gun control laws already have our hands full! This is Kentucky, and our right to keep and bear arms is not negotiable. 🇺🇸

Winston has come out against the Regulatory Standards Bill and will campaign on repealing it at the next election. But the Bill does some useful things - it provides provides an independent check on the quality of lawmaking, an extra layer of protection for Kiwis basic rights in law, and an avenue for appeal if they are violated. Something like this could have helped defend Kiwis who had their rights stripped by the Ardern government during the COVID response, or farmers who have their rights taken away by environmental laws. It could also provide a countervailing force to endless Maorification and Iwi rights initiatives that often come at the expense of the rights of non-Maori.
